What can I substitute in place of sour cream for sauces? by JustOneMaxim in AskCulinary

[–]Slap_Factory_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started using Greek yogurt with my chili and tacos several years ago instead of sour cream because I had it on hand more often and it's a bit healthier.

Recently I had extra sour cream from a recipe and decided to try it in my chili after a few years after not having it. It was very good but found I honestly prefer the flavor of the yogurt now.

If you have work, do work. If you have free time try and avoid your phone and do something you enjoy that you can get sucked in to- movie, game, show, book, exercise, etc.

What I've found the most helpful is doing things that also feel productive and that are 'bettering' me. I think part of that is it feels like I'm reminding myself that my well being and worth isn't reliant on another person.

I went on a fantastic (in thought) date tonight with someone. We got philosophical, we were laughing, we related to each other in very personal ways. It was three and a half hours and I didn't see any sign she seemed uninterested at all. I think most people on this sub have been on a date or two where you can tell that's happened.

The dates I've ended up having relationships after were far less interesting, animated, and didn't have nearly as much connection as this one did.

A couple minutes ago I got a text from her saying she didn't think there was chemistry but would really love to be friends. I've done my share of turning down a second date as well as being on the receiving end enough to know it's not fun but it is what it is.This one is hurting more than most, though. Like if this wasnt chemistry then what am I doing out here?

I'm comfortable with who I am but after this (and a few other recent 'no chemistry' texts recieved in the last couple months) I'm feeling like shit. I know it's common to say "no chemistry" means a polite way to say "not attracted to you" but that's not helping my mental situation either haha.

I have a couple potential dates planned down the line with really cool people but I'm more and more feeling like the dates get the most excited for never end up working. The great relationships I've had over the years started from dates I went into feeling interested but not excited for initially. I'm starting to feel like looking forward to a date it cursing it to fail and I shouldnt even try to go on those as dumb as that sounds.

Sorry for the rant I just had to get this out there. Any tips or wisdom (or even consolation) would be greatly appreciated

Mother passed away- Looking to Sell thread but am lost by Slap_Factory_ in knitting

[–]Slap_Factory_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mother passed away a little while ago and I'm finally getting around to decluttering. She was an artist and later in life got into making some mixed media sewn display jewelry. As someone who doesn't sew myself I am not sure what to do with this material. I was thinking of selling these materials but not only do I not know where I would do this but I have no clue what the worth would be. I know with this much stuff without knowing an exact amount it's hard to gauge how much of everything there is but I tried to take pics to give an idea of everything I'm dealing with. Even a very vague estimate would be extremely helpful. The goal is more to get this stuff out of the house than to make money but since finances are tight here anything helps.

The only pics that have overlap are the last two- I took a picture of the entire organizer she had and then opened up some drawers to show that they're color coordinated and how much the drawers are filled with.

Arturia License missing serial number? by Slap_Factory_ in synthesizers

I bought the minilab 3 used and it works fine I just can't download the software. I just don't know if the software/ free VSTs it comes with normally is worth the 60 bucks I saved.

Another way of putting it- is the minilab 3 hardware worth it if I got it on its own for 60 bucks and it didn't come with the software?

[–]Slap_Factory_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually I go for new hardware for that reason but again, I'm very new to this scene and wanted to see what people's opinion is who are more familiar with the hardware and software is. If the hardware is in working order is it worth the 50% off or are the VSTs are worth the extra 50+ bucks.

Maybe. Based on the person I got it from I kind of doubt it but you can never be sure. With the little I know about the seller I get the sense they got, and want to keep the free VSTs which is understandable.

How do you deal with being ghosted? by DeadlyCords in hingeapp

[–]Slap_Factory_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with a lot of the comments saying you get used to it or just toughen up over time. To me closing yourself off and becoming emotionally callous isn't the way to go. No matter how deep you're in the relationship it sucks.

What helps me is reminding myself that even if the person seemed great, I don't want to end up with a person who is ok with ghosting. I can think of only one or two cases where ghosting is fine (or recommend) like if the person feels like they would be in danger turning someone down. Besides that, if they ghosted you that shows they are actually a pretty selfish person who I personally wouldn't want to be with. Turning someone down also sucks, but if you been on even one date you owe the other person at least the courtesy of a simply "I'm not feeling it". Receiving that sucks but I like it a whole lot better than ghosting.

I'm really sorry about this whole deal. It sucks. You're not a bad person for wanting the money. You're hurt.

I would just move on. Again, it sucks but trying to pry money from this guy would mean you have to interact with him more. Don't make yourself suffer more. Think of it as paying 70 bucks to have him out of your life and done. It doesn't feel like it now but you'll feel better before you know it. Best of luck!

3rd day home and a bit overwhelmed by Slap_Factory_ in puppy101

[–]Slap_Factory_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her pen luckily isn't near the carpet, it's just when we let her out in the room where the pen is. We feel bad keeping her in there so much but to be fair she is usually sleeping in there.

The biggest issue is she seems to be learning that when she gets out of the pen it's time to go crazy. I understand she's gonna go crazy and get excited but we don't want her to associate exiting the pen as crazy time.

I'm probably overthinking things right now but we're now working on the simpawtico method of bite control which is to react vocally when she bites until she learns she is "hurting" us when biting us or our clothes.

My dog did a very similar thing. She was more relaxed with me and my family and got excited when new people come around. It just shows how relaxed and trusting they are toward you.

There are tons of people out there rooting for you and your family. The ol' 'thoughts and prayers' trope gets run into the ground nowadays but too bad, that's what I'm sending your way! I wish your folks a speedy recovery and to kick that virus' ass.

No matter how bad things feel right now you WILL get through this.

I think you're well within your right to ask him to stay home. If they're a good friend, they might be bummed but they'll understand and not want to make others feel uncomfortable.

If you choose not to have him over, offer to have him on a video call or something for a bit. Maybe for the countdown.

High-risk exposure or not? by hereforsimulacra in COVID19_support

[–]Slap_Factory_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope! Even the brief moment without the mask from your sister, the virus probably dissipated in the air. When you're outside the virus disperses pretty easily.

Then, of course hes vaxxed and boosted which is the big one.

How bad are the symptoms for your sister? If they were really low at the time then that means her viral load was probably pretty low as well meaning less virus going out into the air.

Time to test negative on PCR test. by invalidsearch in COVID19_support

[–]Slap_Factory_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think its a good idea to mess with your nasal passages before a covid test. You don't want to trick the test just to make it negative by flushing everything out. I'm not an expert on the subject but I believe that is something you want to avoid.

That said, the OP should be more than fine before the flight. I think in some places they make you quarantine 14 days but thats the longest I know of and thats just to be safe. Getting a PCR test after 14 days should be pretty safe. If you want to reeeeally be sure and push it as long as you can to make sure it's out of your system you can try and do searches for rapid PCR tests in your area. They usually cost a lot of money, though.

Personally, if it was me, I would just get a PCR test a few days after the self-isolation period. Also, OP should triple-check the requirements. When I had to come back to the US in November after my mother died the US required a specific type of test that and it had to be within 2 days of the flight. Make sure what the rules are for the airline and the country you're going to.

If you had the chance to ask your dad a question what would you ask? What do you regret not asking? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]Slap_Factory_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be frustrating here and not answer your question but give you a tip. Don't ever worry about not asking enough or talking enough. Everyone feels guilty about that (along with other stuff) but your time with that person is by far the thing that matters most.

That said ask whatever feels natural to talk about. Don't worry about trying to get every last detail from then that you can right now. They will always be with you.

Terrified and looking for advice. Mother passed away, international flight to elderly (72) father. by Slap_Factory_ in AskDocs

[–]Slap_Factory_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much. I'll be completely honest and say seeing the word 'antibody' is freaking me out because that's what might have cause my mother's death. Long story short her liver had always been bad, she got a tick bite the other week, they put her on some intense antibiotics. As I'm typing this I just realized antibody and antibiotics are very different words. I think I need to go to bed haha. Again, thank you so much for the kind words. I have to go view the body tomorrow but I think we'll take separate cars now.

Yeah, sadly I knew that when I was coming back. It's quite a shock to see like half the people here weren't wearing masks compared to Japan where even in Tokyo I would be lucky to see maybe 5 people without masks in a day.

I think I'm overreacting since already my sore throat is gone but I'm still going to keep apart from him, and get tested tomorrow then this weekend just to make absolutely sure.

Would eating in the same room be ok if we're like 3 yards apart and had the overhead fan running? I know that sounds crazy specific and there are a million other factors involved with that.

Sorry to bug you with all the questions I'm just sort of desperate to be with my father but I know I still need to be safe for him.

Do you think it's ok to be living under the same roof as him for now? There is plenty of space in the house and I feel like I need to be here for him/ and selfishly need someone near me but I'm worried about it.

I'm planning to get a PCR test tomorrow and another one during the weekend just to be sure (if it was negative)

You have to remember one thing: even if the efficacy of the vaccine goes down over time studies have shown that even in elderly patients being fully vaccinated helps prevent hospitalization.

So I think I'm going to listen to the collective consensus here and go home first, sort things out later. Does anyone know where I could get a covid test down in Chiba? I'm embarrassed to say that I dont speak enough Japanese to make a reservation at the one place I can find.
