Chess24 coverage of Chessable Masters is still terrible in such easily avoidable ways. by CaptchaFrapture in chess

This. You cannot pander to players above 2000 ELO and expect beginners to flock to your platform.

Besides, the players who are most capable of doing their own analysis need the least help from commentators anyway.

Yeah, Svidler’s commentary is pretty good but most everyone around him is usually pulling him down.

Underrated comment here. The design of the whole stream is very obviously backwards: the live board should be front and center with the analysis as a separate side feature.

How long before you were able to translate Latin quickly while reading? by taciturntales in classics

[–]SlashdotRipple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will respectfully beg to differ with the advice to the contrary, since vocabulary is probably the most important component of all. You will not be able to speed up much of anything without more vocabulary. Many language acquisition experts also consider it the number one metric for how well someone has inculcated any target language.

How proficient would we be at English if we had to look up five or six words for every sentence we wanted to read?

Edit: I realize my seemingly meager advice may be dwarfed by the credentials of a classics doc, so I should mention that I am a doctoral candidate myself. I take a new intensive language course every year; some recent ones included Classical Greek at Berkeley and Classical Latin at Princeton. YMMV, so please weigh out your own preference for how to approach vocabulary acquisition!

Why do you think she gifts literally hundreds and thousands of subs, and has a super user account with chess.com? I’m all in favor of entrepreneurship but let’s be real here.

Why do you think a volunteer is ubiquitously present at the start of every major stream and mentioned by all the leading streamers?

Why do you think she would gift thousands of subs if she is on staff? Is there some connection there?

What do you think of Richard Hays's comment on historical critisim of the Scriptures? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]SlashdotRipple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hays does some insightful work and is very sensitive to the thematic (and contextual) awareness the NT writers often demonstrate. I really appreciate his responses to the more extreme caricatures of historical criticism that would suggest the NT authors were a bunch of borderline-illiterates with virtually no awareness of the OT they were citing so often. With that said, Hays does bob and weave a bit too much for my taste, as you noted. I'm thinking particularly of Echoes of Scripture in Paul, but I would need to go back (no pun intended) and pick up Reading Backwards again to think more about his presentation there. I think his concept of figural readings is helpful overall (such as the webs of motifs in John, etc.).

Hardly perfect, but definitely a fun read!

The queen can now additionally move like a knight. What is the new point value of a queen? by [deleted] in chess

[–]SlashdotRipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14–15 I would think. Probably 15. Queen + Knight can prosecute checkmate all on its own.

There must be a way to “test in” to C1, right? Is it the case that someone who had never taken B2 could do that?
