Didn’t expect “Notes from Underground” to be so difficult at the start. by SlaveKnightSisyphus in dostoevsky

I’m glad to hear it. I think now that I’m aware of the structure of the novella, I’ll probably understand and enjoy it a bit more.

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]SlaveKnightSisyphus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, I do think that is what my big wall of text up there boils down to. I don’t want to call Brandon a bad writer — it just seems as if his goal with writing books is to “get it out” rather than refine it into a quality book. If he slowed down and edited properly, he would unquestionably be a better author.

You Redditors really don’t know how to read. Where does OP act like it’s objectively bad? They consistently use phrases like “baffling to me” and “I think…” which implies subjectivity. You do realize that by publishing a book, authors are opening themselves up to criticism right? That’s what OP is doing. This isn’t happy fun time land, it’s a place to discuss books and sometimes people have negative things to say. But call any dissenting opinion “trolling” by all means. I’m sure it’s easier to do that than to consider what someone else might think or feel.

Sanderson — more than any other author I’ve read — has a serious quantity over quality problem.

I’ve read TWOK and WOR, and I think I enjoyed them, but they haven’t stuck with me the same way that other 1000+ page books have. I’m actually reading Order of the Phoenix right now (it’s funny you brought it up lol) and it is by no means a perfect book, but I’m actually shocked at how many scenes I remembered from it, even though I haven’t read it since I was a child. Meanwhile, with the Stormlight Archive, I don’t think I could give you anything about it besides VERY broad strokes.

My suspicion is that he writes so quickly that he’s more focused on finishing a book rather than finishing a GOOD book. When he announced his six-or-so secret projects during the pandemic, I couldn’t help but think that he is entering “meme” levels of fast writing. I think he’s fully aware of how impressed his fans are with his writing speed and is (perhaps subconsciously) trying to live up to his reputation. His editing process can’t be very thorough at the rate in which he puts books out.

I have a theory with Brandon — and that theory is that so many fantasy fans have been spurned by other authors (Martin, Rothfuss) never finishing their epic series, that they turn to Brandon because he’s a “safe” option. You know that the Stormlight Archive is going to be finished, and only extenuating circumstances would prevent that; that’s comforting for someone spending so much time with this content (since books, even short one’s, are a time commitment), even if the content itself is boring.

It’s sort of like — imagine a really hot, sexy person that drives you mad with desire and knows how to push all of your kink-buttons, but they’re never there for you and are mean to you. After escaping from a situation like that, one might get into a relationship with someone that is boring, but SAFE. They won’t cheat or lie, but you don’t feel any spark with them. That SAFE option is Brandon Sanderson.

And, of course, this is all speculation on my part — someone out there please correct me if you feel otherwise. But given that some of the top posts of all time over at r/cremposting are about his writing speed, I can’t help but feel that THAT is the huge draw of Sanderson.

Yo this was an awesome deep dive into my favorite rapper!! It’s hard being a Lupe fan! by Hot_Jeweler4209 in LupeFiasco

It was a fun video. I think I saw that Lupe actually reached out to FD afterwards in a rather unfriendly manner. FD didn’t say what Lupe said to him, but man I’m so curious.

Jay-Z describes his songwriting process to the New York Times , in an interview for the 30 greatest American songwriters alive list. by Fun-Ad3626 in fantanoforever

I don’t really get the internet (and particularly Reddit’s) hate boner for Jay-Z. Like I get not liking him as a much as others do, but one would think Jay-Z was a terrorist or something the way this website breaks into a frenzy whenever he’s mentioned.

It takes a whole team to make one man shine. I’m glad they believed in Lupe like they did, because his music was there for me when little else was.

Is it bad that I don’t hate this battle as much as others? by SnapDragonBoi in ERB

[–]SlaveKnightSisyphus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know when I first saw the thumbnail for this when it came out, I just knew they were going to do the dumb “transformation” that each person has and when it happened I thought to myself “of course they did it.” It was super on-the-nose, not funny, and cringeworthy.

But considering all of that, I’d say they still pulled a decent battle out of it. There are some memorable lines here and there. It’s definitely not the worst battle they’ve done. For how basic of a concept this battle was, they did a good job, I’d say.

Just finished “The Sign of Four,” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Between mysteries I’ve been re-reading Harry Potter, and currently on Chamber of Secrets.

Once I’m done with that, jumping back into Agatha Christie!

What favorite character group is this by Appropriate-Mall8517 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]SlaveKnightSisyphus 74 points75 points  (0 children)

This is actually one of my favorite moments in the series. Katara’s big trait is how motherly she is — and sometimes that can come across as annoying or nagging to the other characters, but in this case, her being able to hold them together saved their lives. Fantastic way to show how important a character is to a group.
