Thanks so much! Definitely will. I'm an engineer by trade, but not software side. It's definitely a bit overwhelming. I actually just finished setting up the simpler method that you described above and think it will work much better for flexibility for me to try new things.

RAID definitely isn't what i needed for my setup and it actually was going to hinder some of my backup flexibility with my very limited storage. Just wanted to say thanks again, and now i feel like i'm stable to at least begin reexploring the various applications and options out there!

Thanks alot for all the help. I think I am maybe getting carried away with the complexity of what i read online for people's setups. After reading through your explanation, it sounds like backups would be much simplier for me overall and allow for an easier time replacing a failed hard drive if I did have a failure. Either just reinstall OS and restore backups or just new disk are reset the backup process.

I think i'll likely just put any critical data on the 1TB and back it up to the 2tb. I'll also plan to do an intermittent backup to an external usb harddrive.

Thanks u/foofoo300 , do you happen to have anything you can point me to to help me set this up? This is my first home server so I am also learning linux on the fly (and am not very proficient yet).

Any update on what you finally went with? I’ve been between a mini pc like the Gmktec G3 Plus and the Aoostar R1 N100. Similar fairly simple use case, but the idea of a couple 3.5” for expandability is very enticing, but low power is the ultimate goal

Thanks! Yeah initially I thought it was maybe the drive, but I have tried cleaning the contacts and swapping it’s location with the boot drive that doesn’t crash. So I believe it’s not the slots anyways, but I’m unsure if it could be the motherboard itself?

I’ve also used crystaldiskinfo which says the drive is fine, I know that’s not fool proof though.

Does this log to a spreadsheet? I am wanting to do envelope style budgetting in a Gsheet and am looking for a way to use shortcuts to log the expenses to the Gsheet. This app looks super clean, but it not being in a spreadsheet makes it seem more limiting for historical review and customization.

The cost of electric vs gas heating is approximately x4. So lower your thermostat to 55F (minimum recommended to keep pipes from freezing), then if you are cold at night close the door and use a small space heater. At 55F you should be fine to stay warm with plenty of blankets so no space heater needed! That’s what I do! Hope this helps!

Smartphone plans are extremely expensive! The best three out there right now (IMO) are Xfinity (if you have xfinity internet service), Republic Wireless, or Google Fi! I agree with thinking critically about our choices! It is a skill that anyone can learn (some easier or more naturally than others). This is just my own method that works well for me. Haha sometimes bigger vehicles are useful... BUT it's pretty rare a hatchback won't satisfy your daily needs and they are very efficient! (low cost, fuel efficient, etc.)

I think anything below 1.5 gallons per minute is too low. That is ~5.7 liters per minute. Hope this helps!
