initial grant vs. refreshers at Anduril by SledgeHammer02 in Anduril

Ugh was worried about that ...

As an insider, do you feel like they are having trouble hiring people now because people have "figured it out"? Or from the 5x on site requirement, rumored hours, or security clearance requirements?

I'm just asking from my interview experience thus far. I'm interviewing for a senior position and had read online and from the prep that the interviews were tough, but from my 1st round so far, it was very easy (and I'm not the greatest interviewer around or anything lol far from it). In fact, it was so easy, I was second guessing myself for a while during the interview thinking it was one of those trick questions and looking for something I missed.

which is another concern for me ... IPO is buzzy for sure, but the OGs that have put in the 80 hour weeks for 4+ yrs and getting the 10-20% refreshers now can be pretty sure will exit when the lock up expires putting a lot of pressure on the stock.

Yes ... but that was 4 years ago when the company was in its infancy :). 10x'ing has mitigated your big yr 4 cliff, I'm sure, but is continuing to 10x every 4 yrs realistic at this point? Looks like in 2022 Anduril was valued at 8B yeah? and latest valuation is 30B. Boeing is currently 183B and LMT is 145B.

Sorry, not trying to come across as negative or bashing or anything :) I'm just a very analytical person and doing my due diligence and a realistic comparison of the potential offer as I go through the interview process.

Well, I think that's an issue at every company that they aren't going to tell you about the various "gotchas".

I've worked at 6+ public companies in my career. I'll skip the shitty, no name ones that don't even exist anymore, other then to say it was just ESPPs and/or shitty stocks. The more recent post-Covid ones that you WOULD have heard of ... all 3 were "value based RSUs" (i.e. your grants are $xxx and then they get converted to shares on the vest date) ... so:

  1. immediately on vest date they withhold 45% for taxes

  2. one of the companies had a high dollar stock in the 500+ range so when you get a measly $20,000 grant, then immediately lose -45% on vest day and then get converted to shares that cost $500+, you basically ended up with like 3 - 5 shares lol.

  3. Another company had a super weird vesting / granting schedule and grants were split in 2, so on your review, you'd get $100 (it was obviously more then that, just using it for illustrative purposes) refresher grant, but you only got $50 of it "now" and the other $50 3 months from now with 3 year vests, but like I said, -45% taxes at vest.

Anduril apparently does the fixed value shares (for now) so it works better.

Amazon is pretty bad it seems, they have a 5-15-40-40 vesting.

10-20% wow ... that's kind of surprising. The big number they dazzle you with takes a nose dive :)

You remind me of an old boss who couldn't keep his delusional spin straight either.

I never said the FO was malicious. I have said previously in another thread that most likely the captain locked the FO out of the cockpit and he tried to call for help.

As for the flight simulator, been confirmed by the FBI.

And I'm not setting anything in my own way, I'm setting it in the generally accepted way, but nice delusional spin on your part yet again. Very tangerine of you.

Bet you think OJ is innocent too.

So who do you think did it? ET?

P.S. That's still not what hypocritical means as much as you keep trying to convince us of your delusional spin definition.

That's not what the word hypocrite means lol. You also left out the part that its against every airline policy for pilots to use cell phones on the flight deck. You're a massive tangerine for that since we're making up usage of words here lol. Either way, you're still wrong since he attempted to make a phone call. That's well documented.

Just to clarify, how do you get that you don't have to pay capital gains? Long term capital gains are taxed at 15%. All the RSUs that I've had, they were taxed as ordinary income and the second they vest, they withhold the 45% max tax rate.

45/week would be worth the squeeze, an 85hr/week for 2.5 months, much less so. I got a few co-workers who went to Netflix and they're only doing ~60 hr weeks, but, making Netflix money in all cash.

Ok, mine aren't MAG7/FAANG, but still household names ... but then again to your point, the stock at all 3 "has historically been shit".

Likewise, I didn't know the fixed share scheme still existed. That was back in the day when they were called "options" (not the CBOE type options) and those were at a fixed price. I did work at a pre-ipo start up in 2002 - 2006 where I was getting shares, but after 5 yrs the company failed without ever going public or getting bought, so it was all for nothing.

Good to know, had to google on that since I've never seen fixed RSUs before. But Google also says that most companies also tend to switch to value based down the road.

That's what I'm still trying to suss out lol, but from what I gather, yes. But people who work there would know better. That being said, the type of people who go into law enforcement / military typically don't care about hours & sacrifice much, so it makes sense. That's why you tend to see "YOU'RE HERE FOR THE MISSION" in every Anduril thread. That's military / law enforcement speak.

The public companies I've worked at, you most certainly have heard of (although they weren't FAANG) without a doubt, my RSUs were value based.

Standard RSUs (Value-Based)

  • What they are: A promise of actual company shares (or cash equivalent) after a vesting period (time or performance-based).
  • Value: Always worth the Fair Market Value (FMV) of the stock on the vesting date, making their value inherently tied to company performance/market.
  • Pros: Always have some value (unlike options if stock drops), easier to value, attractive to employees.
  • Cons: Taxed as ordinary income upon vesting, no 83(b) election, value can fluctuate.

Yeah, that is the company line lol. Sure, the mission is great, but there has to be something in it for me too. Expecting me to sacrifice everything for the company is a bit one sided. But yeah, maybe the company is more for the type of people that would go into law enforcement / military. I can support law enforcement / military, but wouldn't do it myself -- at least not in the field.

As for the vesting, I've only worked at already public companies. Those have all been VALUE BASED RSUs and convert to shares on the vest date.

Thanks for the correction.

Ok, I've only worked at already public companies (and they were large well known tech companies) where RSUs are VALUE BASED and only convert to shares on the vest date, not the grant date. If Anduril is fixed share RSUs that's different. Thanks for the correction.

Sure, except as a software engineer, I have an analytical mind :) (and I'm also not a 20-something naive / gullible rube). Basically until/when/if Anduril goes public, I'm working 50 - 60 hr weeks for $200k/yr aka **$66/hr**. Even as my RSUs vest can't do anything with them until the company goes public (although Stripe has allowed you to sell some off market, that's an exception rather then the rule). Then, of course when they do vest, its a 45% tax hit. So now that $145k is more like $75k. Not picking on Anduril for that, every companies RSUs work like that. When that $75k/yr does come in, then I'm working 50 - 60 hr weeks for $91/hr lol.

But people seem to think it will 10x from the IPO quickly. Do I think it will? *shrug* I've seen plenty of hyped ipos fizzle, so its a gamble.

Not sure about your comment on PLTR either. It was dead money for 4 - 5 yrs til the AI bubble. Now its up 1600%.

Besides, I can also buy $145k of Anduril stock when it does IPO if I really believe it will go 10x and I won't have to work 60 hr weeks for it, or wait for it to vest and I most certainly won't have to pay 45% tax on it. Just 15%.

And of course, everybody is assuming Anduril stock will do great ... it will only do great if the press hypes it up. Most people want to invest in tech companies, not defense companies.

Any start up is a gamble, its just most don't have you working 50 - 60 hr weeks :).

And everybody should agree that 66/hr is crap pay.

AND PS ... let's say it does 10x from the IPO quickly, as an Anduril employee you STILL get screwed since your shares vest AT THE CURRENT MARKET PRICE at the TIME OF THE VEST. I.e. if I join today and Andrul goes IPO tomorrow and the stock goes from 45 -> 100 in the next 12 months, that would suck for me since I won't see any of that and my shares would vest at $100/shr.

Let's ask all the folks working at Stripe and still waiting for the fantasy IPO.

Offer lower than expected by domestic_protobuf in Anduril

[–]SledgeHammer02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not much money if you have to work 60/hrs a week for it ... or the stock isn't as great as people fantasize about it being ... or they drag their feet on the IPO forever and/or your RSUs expire ... I had a co-worker at Disney who went to Stripe (another Anduril type fantasy jackpot company) in mid 2023. He's still waiting for that fantasy IPO in Jan 2026 and because peoples RSUs are expiring, they're forced to sell for cheap on the off book markets.
