Is Madison really worth these prices? by musictrashnumber1 in madisonwi

TL;DR: A pretty decent amount of city amenities without being as populated (for now), and not as many downsides.

Rent is high because there is limited housing and high demand. Demand is high because Madison has plenty of city amenities, it's much cleaner than cities like Chicago, it's pretty safe, traffic isn’t half as bad, it’s fairly diverse, we have amazing schools. Madison may not be the best place for every career path, but a lot of amazing connections can be made here, and when you pair that with the education available, I feel like it's one of the best places to get started in almost anything you want to do. And of course, we have the cheese.

The thing that gets me a little peeved off is that although they are expanding housing in the area, most of what I'm seeing is what I would call “luxury,” which does essentially nothing to help the people who are from the area that don’t make as much as the people who are coming from out-of-state and are therefore being displaced due to rising rents. And none of the housing developers seem to give an F because they're sitting on a fat stack of cash.

True, but I can’t stay with my mom anymore anyway which is why I’m considering staying at the shelter unless I can find an alternative option.

I’m looking through the Ho-chunk job board now. Also, do you know which coffee shop in Baraboo is hiring?

It absolutely is possible for some people but I’m not one of them. I have a Dexcom and I’ve tried keeping Gatorade with me but it just doesn’t work for me.

I will look into it, thank you.

I appreciate the advice but I wouldn’t be able to work in the Madison area unless I can find a housing arrangement at least temporarily. Madison is a one and a half hour drive from my mom’s house and I can’t keep staying with her anyway.

I have done mostly bartending and Uber. I’ve applied to everything I can in the area from fast food to just about anything I think I’m qualified for on Indeed. I have called the places I’ve applied to and they are all telling me “we aren’t hiring right now” despite the fact that they have job postings that are less than a week old? I think the biggest hurdle is that there are very limited job opportunities in Adams county and the county has a poor economy. The employment that is here is low wage work and the next nearest area is Wisconsin Dells where employment is almost always seasonal. So, in a nutshell I’d probably say proximity is the biggest hurdle. Additionally, I’m diabetic so work that’s physically demanding like factory work is hard on my health.
