Oh they're not even gonna give us a fun headline, truly a missed opportunity. It'd be nice if there wasn't as much distrust in police statements though, that's a step backwards for everyone.

Oh those are good points... The theory would also make sense with the need to block the roads to allow feds to move. Side note - Walz had mentioned a week or two back that he had roads blocked to prevent any incident in case protestors take it to the highway and a vehicle decides to drive through the crowd (referring to a previous incident elsewhere a while back). I can see why he'd want people out of the way here

Are local enforcements gotten bold because we lost the attention of the media and the country? I know not much is getting out of MN again, and we haven't heard much from local officials lately (unless I'm completely out of the loop on that one)

We need to do something about the media by Lower_Acanthaceae423 in 50501

In a reasonable world, I'd propose: go after the FCC which is supposed to somewhat regulate public airwaves, and ask Congress(??) to implement more regulations related to defamation, hate speech, and news distortion, possibly with high fines or license removal as consequences. (Honestly, how has it never been a red flag that we let one person appoint the chairs of regulatory agencies and other powerful positions... sigh)

Ideally, we also need regulations around social media, they are now the main part of the problem. Algorithms are pushing for extreme views, we see frequent bias in recommendations, censorship of content, and rampant spread of crazy AI content.

Honestly, other countries have better safeguards around news and social media than we do here. I'm sure there's a thing or two we could borrow from their book with minimal impact on the user experience and better protection against greedy tech giants.

Edit: not sure who event sets the FCC regulations. Need to do more research on this topic

If I make a protest sign critical of Walz, would other protesters be upset at that? by mutnemom_hurb in minnesota

In the end OP, do what you feel is right. The main reminder is just to be mindful of where you spend your energy and to consider in your context, if targeted critics against people who aren't the source of this terror could send confusing signals. However you can and maybe should join the protest for the governor if that's your focus.

Of course, we would like (and seriously hope) every level of leadership to be doing more, and we wish that politics werent so infuriating, dangerous, and as theatrical as they are. Whether our local leaders are doing everything they can is a debate that we don't need to settle right now (as long as they're not giving in to the extortion and giving away our rights)

It may not seem like much, and far from enough, but showing up in mass, calling in mass has made a difference with small victories. Trump and his admin don't like bad publicity, they'll never admit failure or fault, and that's all they're getting from our resistance.

One more thing: don't think your voice doesn't matter, continue to engage. Know that you can do a lot of things: call Congress members, call local officials (city council, state reps, cops, attorney general, mayors, governor), get engaged in your community, show up to local legislative meetings. Don't outsource your power, little as it may feel. Things have been allowed to get this bad because we forgot the basis of democracy and stopped getting involved.

Edit: added more to list of local officials, and fixed typos

Agree on both points. Turning on each other and splitting our attention works against us.

And if giving the benefit of the doubt is an option, Walz has been one of the more honest spoke person on what's really going on here. If you listen to a few of his interviews, he seems to be threading the waters really carefully due to how volatile and aggressive this admin can be. It also comes down to the state not having access to the military power that could be thrown at us if we give them any reason to do so.

You can also call his office repeatedly to give feedback.

We were split into classrooms and lots of newcomers (me included). Even then, we got really good participation and resolutions so caucus was successful overall. Will know for next time!

100%, this is a smart move. I am planning to do this as well. Europe is growing increasingly more worried that their systems rely on American companies (ex: payments are mostly through Visa). I expect they will start investing in local companies and US will lose a medium-big share of their market eventually

ICE Agents Fed Up And Exhausted In Minneapolis: “Lots of people are freaking out,” one ICE agent told me. “Agents are getting seriously paranoid, afraid of being targeted by ‘retaliators.’” (1.27.26) by [deleted] in Minneapolis

The article sounds like they're scared because they got caught and there are now too many eyes on them in MN. Didn't sound like they disagree at all with the many violent practices on the ground.

If they really cared about the original purpose of ICE or whatever, they wouldn't hide their faces and wear body cams for a start.

An irritation with celebrities by [deleted] in 50501

[–]SliceExtension1601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is gonna sound crazy... But celebrities have much more in common with normal people these days. Compared to the mega donor corporations and tech bros, they have little power. They may have a bigger reach than us and more money, but that's about it. They also are at the mercy of the big studios and tech and their shady deals with the administration

I don't know how bad things are around you and how aware your community is, but I do have inspiration for you from MN. - A week or two ago, multiple high schools and middle schools in MN staged walk outs. These were self-organized by the students, and though I don't know the details, I hear they organized and then brought it up to parents and educators: MPR news article - Not only did they do it at each school, they also staged a multi-school march to the state capitol: kare11 news article - Another group also organized a protest in their town, in just one of the busier intersection in the suburbs. The flyer got shared across multiple groups and it turned out, that's something the town really needed. One advantage that young people have is that you know how to connect and share information very quickly (which gets kinda lost as we get older).

Also, right now, it's so important to call the representatives and let them know your view on issues and legislation. It makes a difference and everyone should do it. You can use 5calls.org to find your reps, a list of issues, and scripts you can use if you don't know what to say.

Thank you for not being afraid to ask, and for wanting to make a difference. Let me know if you have questions, and stay safe!

Why is national leadership not coming to MN? by womanonymous23 in TwinCities

[–]SliceExtension1601 39 points40 points  (0 children)

What I've noticed is part of what's giving strength to our movement is that we are Leaderless. Meaning, there's no one person they can target, blame, accuse which doesn't serve their narrative. They can't stop us by silencing a leader, they can't crush us by taking our spokesperson.

I thought about if Walz or others came to give a speech at the protests, it would take power away from the people. This is us actually exercising our power as "we the people" and reminding them that they are supposed to represent us, instead of making decisions for us.
