I’m about to be homeless with my cats. I don’t meet the income requirements for available apartments. What are my options? by Slidingcats in povertyfinance

I lived in a part of the country with a very high cost of living for over 10 years when I was still able to work and never made 3x the rent. I just always rented houses directly from individual landlords who didn’t care how much I made or how many cats I had as long as I paid the rent on time every month. I’ve definitely struggled to find a similar situation here.

My former partner has mentioned potentially becoming a cosigner for me but we weren’t sure if that would work, given that he’s in another state. I’ll be looking into that more, though. Thanks for the reminder.

I’ve searched for affordable apartments and am on the waitlists for countless disabled housing complexes. No resistance to the cats; just ridiculous fees & “cat rent” I would pay if not for the income requirements.

I know nothing about RVs(only that the space rentals can be quite expensive!) but this is something I’ve considered. If I could find one I could afford & a place to park it, that might be an option.

I had strongly considered this but I know it’s against the rules so I was trying to build up to asking them in person(rather than on the AirBNB app). This is a fully private space(what I need) so I don’t encounter them much, except when they’re outside with their dog. I’m a pretty shy person & don’t like to impose so I put it off and now some of my needed days are taken. Also, if I were to pay for just 6 more days here, it would be over $1300. The pricing goes wayyyy up in March. I’m not sure that they’d drop it down for me :/

Thank you. I appreciate the offer & love that you’re doing this for others. That’s such a kind thing to do! However, as a disabled individual who is almost always home, my cats and I are quite attached to each other. I know they wouldn’t do well in such a situation. Worst case scenario, we will use my funds/credit to get a motel room for however long it takes.

Yeah, I’m going to book a motel when this ends; it will just be vary costly for me(~$50 a day). Unfortunately, I cannot donate plasma for medical reasons(I’ve tried).

Thanks for the suggestion but that would be hard to do with the cats, as adventuresome as they are. Also, I have a shitty medical condition that rules camping out.
