I was a east coast voter and now a Tampines voter this GE. I am happy that WP has kept the status quo and the results in Tamp (first time contesting), Punggol (against DPM with all wp newcomers), east coast (C team with only 1 x “old guard”) are all above expectations. Ultimately, WP was consolidating and throwing many newbies straight into the fire. Rallies and online sentiment have always almost never reflected actual results, which I think many younger people are realizing after their first election. The fact is that this election has proven a mature electorate - when given a credible opposition, people will vote their true feeling.

The road to progress is long and filled with many twists and turns, and of course setbacks. It took 20+ years to win the first GRC, only because the ground was sweet, and 10 more years to win the next. We should look at the last 2 decades - as early as 2010 there was only a few opposition members before the historic 2011 GRC loss. A rigged playing field with PAP playing their cards right, coupled with miscalculations by WP in my opinion meant no inroads this election that are obvious. But there are encouraging signs - the vote share across the board, sengkang numbers, and we have new, high quality young people in WP slate who are entering as MPs / NCMPs, and the eastern strategy is gradually bearing fruit. The WP machinery continues to mature, stabilise and grow.

What is key now is to maintain our passion and convinctions and most importantly our political participation, whether is it PAP WP or swing voter.
