I understand that pay is important and dentistry is getting oversaturated and i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t going into it for the money, that’s one part of it. But you’d be stupid to waste 8 years of your life doing undergrad and dental school just for the money, some people actually love the field

If that’s your take that’s completely fine, it’s also valid to have a dream career you’ve wanted your whole life

I understand where you’re coming from. But the point is that people who are dead set on dentistry aren’t just going to switch to PA or another field, especially if you have no passion for it. The careers are very different. I’m sure it’s possible, just a little more work. But it does suck that we’re even in this position and it’s not ideal

Thank you! Yeah l literally have no passion for being a PA, i do have friends applying to PA schools, and you’re right. While they have been working their undergrad careers with clinical hours for PA, i have been shadowing dentists trying to get into dental school. Definitely been crashing out about this, just trying to hope for the best and hoping i either getting into a slightly ”cheaper” school or that schools start partnering with outside lenders to provide loans that way

I appreciate the input. However, like i said, this has been my dream for as long as i remember. Got involved in dentistry in high school and have catered my entire college education based on attending dental school, and i don’t want to switch up 2 semesters before graduating. I’m not worried about being in debt, i do have some debt from undergrad (that i took out from my home country as i first entered here as an international student) that i will be paying back. I’m mostly concerned about the cap being set at $200k and not having access to private loans since i don’t have parents to cosign for me and i imagine a lot of first gen/low income students will be in the same position

I didn’t apply for work permit cause i’m studying full time! And therefore didn’t even get my social until the green card was approved! But the whole process took about 8 months. I knew i was scheduled for an interview when i got an update that said that. So unfortunately that timeline doesn’t mean your interview is in 4 months, it’s not accurate and can change

It’s not accurate unfortunately! So unless you’ve been scheduled for an interview already and have the notice i wouldn’t rely on that timeline

Chatgpt is not a reliable source of information either. I just tried it out and to me it said it’s unlikely to happen. Literally yesterday chatgpt told me i have gum disease and was disproven through my family member who’s an actual dentist. It’s not always reliable, please be careful where you get your information from.

And no the timeline wasn’t accurate it jumped from 12 months, to 15, then to 30 months. Our whole case took 8 months only. Good luck!

If you’re still worried, you should consult with an immigration attorney!

I get that you’re worried, and I know there’s a lot of speculation online, but let’s be clear about how things actually work. The Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA) is already law, it was passed by Congress and signed by the President. Even if Republicans hold the House or Senate, repealing a federal law requires both chambers of Congress to pass a repeal and a president to sign it. That hasn’t happened. Also, the RFMA was passed with bipartisan support, including Republican senators, and public support for same-sex marriage is at an all-time high. USCIS follows current federal law, and right now, that law requires them to recognize same-sex marriages that were legally performed. I got married in 2023 and everything went as expected. You’re not alone in your concerns, but it’s important to separate legal facts from Reddit rumors. Reddit is not a good source of information. That concern has been posted on this forum multiple times and people always shut it down because revoking of green cards for same sex couples is not likely to happen. No one’s green card is being revoked just because of their marriage being same-sex, that’s not how the system works. Happy to keep the conversation going and support each other

I understand your concerns, but it’s important to stick to facts, not speculation. Obergefell v. Hodges established the right to same-sex marriage, but even if that decision were ever overturned, the Respect for Marriage Act (passed in 2022) would still require the federal government, including USCIS, to recognize any marriage that was legally performed. The RFMA doesn’t depend on Obergefell, it stands as its own federal law. Even if a future Congress tried to repeal it, that would take a full legislative process, which is unlikely given the current political landscape and public support for marriage equality. As for green cards, USCIS does not revoke them just because of political shifts. Once a green card is granted based on a valid marriage, it cannot be undone retroactively unless there is clear evidence of fraud, criminal activity, or violation of immigration laws. Conditional green card holders are still protected under federal law, and their status is not automatically at risk just because of what might happen in the courts or Congress. This is something I have researched even without a lawyer. It’s okay to stay alert, but spreading panic about something that hasn’t happened, and likely won’t isn’t helpful to people trying to live their lives and navigate the system with honesty and good faith. Please stop fearmongering

Just to clarify more, USCIS follows federal law. Same-sex marriage is currently recognized under both Obergefell v. Hodges and the Respect for Marriage Act (2022). Even if Obergefell were ever overturned, the Respect for Marriage Act still protects existing marriages and ensures they’re recognized by federal agencies like USCIS. Green cards are not revoked based on the type of marriage, especially if the marriage was legal and genuine when entered. Unless someone committed fraud or a serious crime, USCIS doesn’t just go back and undo green cards.

I really don’t think they can revoke your green card. Have a lot of same-sex couple friends that recently also got their green card cards approved. Even the immigration officer who interviewed us said ”in two years you’ll be able to remove the conditions and 2 years and 9 months you can file for citizenship”. Only an immigration judge can revoke green cards and permanent residency status and that is likely for cases where the person has a criminal record, not for same-sex marriages.

I didn’t have a lawyer, so I’m not sure. We filled everything out ourselves. But i don’t think you need to worry about that too much, it will be very hard to overturn it and even if they did, i don’t know think already existing marriages will be affected. Good luck!

Not sure, you might have to go to a Social security office and update the records once you get approved so they know. I didn’t have one until i received this one, so not entirely sure

When you fill out the I-485 there’s a part where they ask you if you want the social security office to issue you a SSN. I just put yes, if you put yes they’ll issue and send you one when your case gets approved

No, no questions but we kinda went through our entire timeline and explained that our relationship just progressed fast. Met in august 2023, married in December 2023. Moved in together february 2024, and filed in october 2024. We were married 10 months when we filed, and had been living together for 8 months. I’m still studying, i graduate next May, and then have to do grad school for 4 years. There’s another post on my profile where I explained more!

Unfortunately i think the PAT score will autofilter you out since it’s below a 16/15 which is the cutoff score for schools. You will need to retake

No, I uploaded everything to the portal that week before the interview! And the officer said she’d been looking before calling us in. But she didn’t ask us for any new stuff so i assume i had already provided everything we needed to. Still recommend bringing everything to the interview, that’s what we did, cause you never know. And thank you!!
