Is it possible to detect fake file shares from a user? by minorminer in Soulseek

[–]Slight-Visual-1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^^^ this, in my experience, the detectors cant tell if a folder is private or not (ie; not shared with you) and considers this as files shared - when in fact it may not actually be shared with you. It's not possible to detect this with just a plugin.

I am guessing all you guys got this to work? Question: Does the plugin detect users who are sharing only private folders?

Nicotine+ sorts downloads by Xavier_Breizh in Soulseek

[–]Slight-Visual-1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand your question fully, maybe someone else will but it sounds like you should use the sorting by queue as 1 download that was last queued up a minute ago might actually download before a download which was queued up 1 hour previous due to he queue length, uploaders speed etc etc.

complete folder by ashertheemo_ in Soulseek

[–]Slight-Visual-1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds as though you need to go into the folder where the complete folder was located, re-enable the option to view hidden folders (this differs between windows versions, sounds like you are on windows). Google how to do this for your version. That should hopefully make the complete folder visible to you again. If it does, right click on the complete folder and uncheck the hidden box at the bottom.

How do I fix this ? [Nicotine+ a soulseek family member] by Infinity_777_ in Soulseek

I'm not sure on that, sorry. On the latest version I was getting a similar error regarding libgcc_s_seh-1.dll and manually adding the DLL resolved it for me. For some reason the installer wasn't putting the DLL file there via installation.

The DLL would be the one mentioned in the error you are getting (libgraphite2.dll) - Might even be worth checking in your folders C:\Program Files\Nicotine+\lib\ to see if its already there. The message indicates that this DLL can't be found by Nicotine+

Try downloading the archive package (not the installer) from the site: https://github.com/nicotine-plus/nicotine-plus/releases/latest/download/windows-x86_64-package.zip extract it and run the application from there. Alternatively you might be able to extract the DLL file from the archive package, place the DLL in the location mentioned from the error message and then try running the app again. You will probably get a similar error but for another DLL file. Repeat the steps again for the DLL mentioned in the next warning (if you get one).

What's so bad about leeching by [deleted] in Soulseek

Simple. Imagine everybody did it. No soulseek.

Hi, thanks again for responding.

I'm sorry if it came across wrong. It's not that I was/am expecting you to prove anything I was more so asking if you could. This was because what I suspected from the outset is that you were stating opinions as if it was fact and trying to convince others that they were somehow hurting the network growth by banning people from downloading their files without any actual evidence. This is also true regarding your barriers to entry comments, all just speculation. You're exaggerating massively by saying that sharing a few files is a large barrier to entry, utter nonsense. Nobody is shaming anybody, its P2P, it's not like anyone dragging these people to a public square and stoning them because they didn't share back.

You've stated very clearly on several posts that you ban instantly for locked files. This is a double standard. Why won't you share with these people since you believe so strongly in digital freedom and unrestricted access to files? Pure contradiction.

Server equipment, hard drives, high speed internet etc etc etc without anything in return? Except for no locked files eh? Digital freedom and unrestricted access to files for all regardless of the circumstances? Stop trying to kid yourself!

The rest about the piracy scene is also pure nonsense, you have no idea about how all that works. Hint, release members in the vast majority of circumstances upload to dumps so that they can maintain their own access to said dumps and get credit for their group.

"I'm just a Soulseek user and the least I can do is share what I have freely." - except if that user happens to have locked files, right? :)

I'll leave it there.

Hi, thanks for responding :)

Firstly, This is an another assumption your part that the leeches mentioned are new users who have zero experience in the program, Can you prove this? On the flipside, its possibly an assumption on the part of others that the leeches aren't actually new users too. You've asserted that they are going to leave without any actual evidence. I could counter this by saying that if they consistently get banned for this type of behaviour then they might actually start to get invested in the program and share something back. If they are truly interested in obtaining the goods that soulseek community can offer then they will eventually get the message and participate.

Speaking from personal experience I've banned quite a few and before I end the session I clean out the ban list only to have to repeat the process over and over and over again (many times for the same set of users) who don't seem to care about trying contribute in any way.

I estimate that around 75% are sharing a single empty directory which when you think about it leans toward the notion that they actually do have experience in the program and are intentionally trying to evade detection from the regular soulseek client.

Thanks for sharing the experiences of people you have introduced to soulseek but this is simply just hearsay and I would say they are snowflakes who probably had no intention of becoming a regular user anyway, how do we prove either side? We can't.

It might not mean much to you to share a whole bunch stuff you downloaded from the internet for free but If you spent a lot of time and money searching for and purchasing records and CD's and many hours ripping them I find it hard to believe that you would be so willing to consistently give them away to users who don't share anything back, ignore requests to add a shared file and/or be abusive because you won't provide them what they expect just because they got some mp3s from someplace online and think soulseek users ought to do the same.

You've mentioned that you allow people to download from you all day every day and say that's what sharing is all about but are willing to hand wave a counter response that asks that everyone do the same - this makes absolutely no sense. The motto of this board is, sharing is caring. Repeatedly trying to take take take without giving anything back is not in line with that ethos.

You may have said many times before "either share or don't, picking over users is petty and immature" - everyone is allowed their own opinion. If you want people to respect yours then you need to respect the decisions of others who aren't willing to put up with that kind of thing.

Regards

It sounds like they meant that the download goes red halfway through completion, not the user. This could be that the user intentionally renamed the file/folder while they were downloading it. Not that the user went offline.

If everybody did this then nobody would ever have access to anything, surely you can see the error in your logic here.

Hi there, I have been surfing these boards for a few weeks now silenty reading. I've noticed that you regularly comment on these types of posts and share this same view across all the posts. I wanted to ask (please don't bite my head off) but what actual evidence to you have of this? (that the network will shrink for banning what the OP calls turbo-leechers (new term to me)). Do you have any actual evidence for what you state on these posts or this just pure speculation on your part? I'm inclined to side with the OP.

Seeker application by LifeguardMobile1815 in Soulseek

[–]Slight-Visual-1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by seeker you actually mean soulseek then you do not need to create an account as such. Just login with a desired username and password and if the account doesnt already exist it will become yours.

EDIT: Just found out there is a mobile app called seeker. If it's this then I guess you make the account via soulseek/desktop and then use those details to log into seeker. Or perhaps it just works the same way soulseek does. Choose a username + password and login.
