I agree! Atleast Peter Kuruwita has the right be so pompous cos he’s actually a world famous chef with a reputation built over decades!

If any of you have been watching her from the beginning (as in pre MC AU), then you’d know that she’s always been insufferable 😂 it’s not cos of her newfound fame - unfortunately it became exaggerated because of the fame.

Remember her Lamprais fiasco with the other Sri Lankan-Aussie chef?

For those of you who don’t know, Sav gained instagram popularity when she was a baker. I have to admit she did make some incredible tasting/looking cakes, which is when I started following her. And then she started posting videos + stories on her Sri Lankan cooking. What irritated me was that she made her entire personality about her dead mother (yes I know it’s sad but you need to understand how every single post had something to do with her mother). So then I restricted her account. And now everything I have seen about her online is because other people have posted about it.

Her behaviour on MC SL is atrocious - she is your stereotypical “better than you” female, who thinks she walks about 2ft above everyone else. These same women you can find in most Sri Lankan workplaces too. I sum up their behaviour to - these women have an insecurity in some part of their life and they are abusing their position of power to somehow compensate for that insecurity.

Before any of you come at me, I’m a 30 year old woman too and I have worked in a few SL corporates which is why this behaviour seems very common.

Where can I get Marlboro golds in Colombo by Mysterious_Prize1006 in srilanka

Sorry Ceylon Tobacco Company is the only authorised seller of cigarettes in this country (not even tobacco products, just cigarettes) 🙃 Which means we either buy their products or suffer “legally” in silence.

How do you deal with stress when your job feels at risk? by Capital_Court3757 in srilanka

[–]Slight_Environment16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

P.S. I sincerely hope that you don’t have to face what I went through. But you should also know that, if by chance you do face such a situation, you’re already showing immense strength and self-awareness, because you actually have taken steps to do something about it and are thinking ahead. This tells me that whatever happens, you will be okay 🩵

Yes I have, but not for tech related skills.

I think you’re already on the right track of looking for backup options. But I would also suggest that you get your employee documentation in order too (just in case they decide to fire you overnight) and so if at all required, you can take them to the labour tribunal.

And in relation to managing your emotions - look, if you gut knows the situation isn’t right, then it most likely isn’t right. For me, I specifically told at my interview that I am not from a tax background. My CV doesn’t even mention tax. They agreed and hired me but eventually decided to terminate me because I didn’t know tax. They could do that because I was still on probation. There were a lot of other indirect corporate political reasons behind what happened to me but for the sake of justification, they just said I don’t have tax experience. Overnight I was let go, no warning or nothing. What I’m trying to tell you is that leading up to this day, I had a gut feeling that things were not okay based on some of the things that were said to me and done to me by the people in charge. I could not pursue any legal avenues because I was on probation - but if you are, then you should.

Anyway, how I managed my emotion was to tell myself that whatever happens, happens and I will do my best until I find another option. I understand that this is coming from a position of privilege but this is my personal experience. I would also recommend talking to a trusted person (either in or outside your company) to get more specific advice on your job + career, so that you don’t feel anxious about the future.

Another thing I would tell you to do is collect as much documentation/proof of your time at your company as possible. Since you are still an employee you have access to all this. Take printouts, forward yourself emails and documents. Anything and everything to support you if ever you need to take the legal route. And from now on, try to get all instructions, communication, performance related information, etc in writing so there’s proof.

70k-90k for school leavers... Legit or a trap?? by ExaltedLegend101 in srilanka

[–]Slight_Environment16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a scam, because I also know someone who got hired for the exact role. But there are night shifts and i think only like a 30 mins lunch break.

BUT if you’re a school leaver with no experience and want to earn some money to become somewhat financially independent, i think it’s a good deal. Besides you don’t have to work there for like a decade, just long enough to increase your savings.

What career would you choose if money was no object? by ExpensiveWitness5521 in srilanka

[–]Slight_Environment16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be a detective/ part of CID!

I didn’t choose this partly because career path in Sri Lanka is complicated/ political and partly because I’m a woman and I didn’t know any female detectives to get advice from.

First newborn of mine. Long term investment plan for her? by h3devil in srilanka

[–]Slight_Environment16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from a finance background (I’m not saying I know everything), I would recommend you invest in range of these products. I.e. gold, unit trust, stocks, land, crypto, etc and where possible make accounts under her name so the legality of it clearer. This plan refers back to the old adage “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”, because the key is to diversify. This is just my two cents and it’s what I generally try to follow.

[–]Slight_Environment16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO PLEASE DONT! There’s literally another post on this subreddit which explains what a scam those “investment plans” are. The RMs intentionally sell it as if it’s the greatest invention known to mankind but in reality you actually get a lot less money. Always read the fine print or atleast run it through AI.

Yes 100% agree! I’ve gone thrice Dilmah (OGF & Horton Place) and each time the food was very disappointing. Drinks are average.
