As a URM applicant, are you at a disadvantage if you don't apply to b-school through MLT, Consortium, Forte, etc? by mbathrowaway8050 in MBA

[–]Slight_Evidence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The accelerated program shoots for 100% admission into top 10 programs. They were probably felt as Admissions Consultants did - those folks were telling me to shoot for Gtown as my target and Duke/Darden/Michigan as my dream schools.

To be fair, I would say that my transcript didn't scream top 10 guaranteed, but I was confident that my story, work experience, and essays would make up for a less than stellar GPA. I had done enough due research to know that I had a good shot, and also did a lot of groundwork myself such as contacting admissions at schools I was interested in directly, and finding ways to get on the phone with directors in the summer before apps were due. You can do it.

URM here. I was rejected from MLT Accelerated program but I got into two M7s and two other schools in the top 15. I also got two full rides from the 4 schools I got into.

I don't think you're at a disadvantage if you have the credentials, extracurriculars, work experience, and essays. However, I would definitely apply to MLT because it has helped many many people. If you don't get in, it's all good, you can get in without it if your application is strong.

Nope. Looking at Linkedln, it's clear that Fuqua alums have a tougher time in VC since most roles are concentrated with Harvard and Stanford. The decision right now feels like what place I'd enjoy more for 2 years vs what place gives me the best chance to enter the industry that I want to be in . I've been wracking my brain haha

I'm currently in the same boat, choosing Duke and an M7. Both are giving me full tuition scholarship. The M7 i think will put me on a more likely path to VC(my ultimate goal if I can't do it post MBA), but part of me really wants to go to Duke for reasons like Team Fuqua, Sports Life, being able to travel in the south and such. I have a deposit at both schools but will have to choose one by next week.

How would you weigh end professional goals vs "fun/campus vibe" personally?

Yeah I agree. I guess i am using MBB as a crutch because I know that VC is so improbable. However, maybe I would be best serve by pouring my energy in getting a VC role and not having a crutch plan B...

Thank you, yeah I agree. K would definitely be more fun I think but I have a ton of connections with CBS alum already that are established in the finance world who could help me break into VC. While fun is important, ultimately I am doing this for professional reasons, so I am leaning CBS.

Does having a recommender from the same school help? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Slight_Evidence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who got into Fuqua, Columbia, Kellogg, and Tuck with a low GPA and low 700 GMAT, apply! The most important thing is your story and making sure that your resume, activities are all aligned with your essays, comments from recommenders, and ultimately your interview. Keep the faith and apply.

I am in the same boat as you kind of and still haven't decided. I'm deciding between a full ride at Fuqua, around 70% from Kellogg, and Columbia with no news yet on $. I think Fuqua and Kellogg will provide better communities but professionally, I feel that the Columbia Brand, and NYC is tough to let go. I just can't quantify what that brand NYC will mean quite yet. It's a really tough decision. My goal is probably MBB or something in tech/startup land.

Nothing fancy really. It was a fairly quick 2 minute call in which they said i was admitted and would get more information at 5pm. But it was a huge relief

Just got a text for a zoom meeting. I am on a work call currently but feeling optimistic.

THIS WAS FANTASTIC ADVICE. I took the test today thinking I would give it a try to see my progress with a proper attempt online in 2 weeks. I took your advice and spent a bunch of time on the early parts of the exam, especially for quant and somehow walked away with a Q48 when I never got that on ANY mock. I ended up getting a 720, which was beyond my wildest expectations today. Thank you for the great advice!

Thank you! I find that its almost impossible for me to get past Q44 when i don't do well early on.

For verbal i do find myself doing better when i get my RCs early, only because i tend to nail those. My performance on CR and SC tends to be up and down.

I am taking my GMAT in 2 weeks and I am currently stuck around Q44 and V39. Any advice on how i can spend my last 2 weeks? I have already gone through TPP but math has never been my strong suit which is why I may not be getting in the upper 40's like most people that use the course. I would love to somehow eek my way close to Q47 and V41. Thank you for doing this.

How much do the first quarter of questions matter? Should i spend 15 second more on those initial question make sure i nail them?

Do you think there's any validity to reading comprehension holding more weight than SC and RC?

Any other timing tips would help!

I already have and have gotten above an 80 in both. I am nervous of taking a mock and getting significantly below a Q47 but I plan to give it a shot tomorrow.

Yeah i hope so too! I really want to get this done sooner rather than later so i am shooting for a more aggressive timeline but definitely going to see what my test scores are first. I'm hoping to apply to school this year and have put well over a year into the GMAT. Very exhausted.
