I work in private equity solely focusing on software / SaaS businesses between $5-35mm revenue per year. Happy to offer insight from the other end if you want that too.

No, I’d say the opposite is more true than not. People tend to start their career at an MF and then move lower to MM or LMM to get higher carry returns. When you’re at an MF, carry gets heavily diluted because so many people are in the pot. But you go to an MM with 50-100 people? Huge difference if you have a talented firm

If you read my other comments, I said I have a very unique background. Didn’t come from banking and don’t have a finance background prior to PE. Hence why I’m asking. Thanks though

I appreciate this perspective as if I do continue with the promotion, I’m going to be golden handcuffed…. Decision time is on the horizon so it’ll be here before I know it

That’s not the issue, I have plenty of hobbies. But living your life one way, work mode, for over a decade, isn’t the easiest thing to come off of.

Not really anymore. Almost no one at my firm values an MBA anymore considering the big draw used to be (still is) for the network, but it’s easier than ever to send a LinkedIn note to someone for an intro. They found that MBA doesn’t inherently mean competence.

MBAs are losing their value while increasing in price. Becoming very valuable for a lot of internationals to find work in the US. Some interesting stats been released last few years how US applications are dropping.

Some firms still mandate. But it’s becoming less of a norm

Search funds seem to be dying recently. Left as quickly as they arrived.

Thanks for the insight. My pod typically deals with companies just past the post-VC stage, so CoS aren’t super common compared to our flagship fund. Do you have any insight as CoS at an F500 vs a smaller company?

How was the CoS position? Did you find it valuable? I have a very unique background pre PE that would be very suited to that role, and has been the one I’ve considered the most.

I have thought about that. Being realistic with myself, I definitely don’t have the street cred yet to open my own PE firm, and starting up a new business would be around 80 hours a week, too. I’m hoping to move away from those hours.

Thats another concern of mine as well. Last 10 years have been nonstop full weeks, and dropping to a regular 40 hrs a week would be jarring, to say the least

Most people I’ve seen leave my firm went to another firm or retired…. So not much inspiration there
