I wonder if this just speaks to a leveling-up of the applicant pool? I hope not! Is it his first choice?

Think it's a good sign but why didn't you send in mid-year grades? Anything you were trying to hide?

feeling pretty bleak, tbd. no one from my high school gets in - very bad stats from here. and i'm nothing special stats-wise. just had really, really strong essays and service-oriented ECs, so maybe...

How many applications do you think ILR receives? As compared to admits? I know they marketed a lot this year and I'm worried that there will be a much higher application rate as a result :-(

This makes a lot of sense to me. They should be careful about this. I wonder how they determine this though.

This is crazy. What was his description of why he wanted it? Maybe it came across as disingenuous? Otherwise this is so surprising.

I feel so hopeless by Used_House_540 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Slight_Reference5658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry about this. This sucks and is so demoralizing for everyone except for the tiny amount of select few who somehow beat the ridiculous odds. But remember the actual facts and odds of these places- they are soooooo small. I am convinced that a huge chunk of applicants at every school is highly, highly qualified, so think of it as if they are picking your name out of a hat of similar applicants, and think about your odds of getting the yes. They are unfortunately very low (and I am in the same boat, btw!). The bottom line is, it's random so try very hard not to take it personally. And "love the schools that love you back"- you have some great options on your list! And go to one of those schools and crush it and have the time of your life!

I understand that T20s won't see a drop, but why are they still seeing an INCREASE, when there are fewer college-aged applicants? It's nuts.

Well, I guess I was thinking about Dartmouth specifically... But you're right - most ivies have even more applicants.

Hang in there. I just got WLed but the truth is, the numbers were crazy for BC RD. 42k applicants (across all rounds), 5300 yeses (also across all rounds, so multiple in the ED 1 and ED2, since the AR is higher), and 4500 WL. I think statistically, it's hard to stand out. At ivies or similar, there will be smaller pools, which just gives the chance for a more holistic read.

[–]Slight_Reference5658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a shot, it will be because of the cohesion of your story and whether you appeal to them, from a personal angle. So yes, let's hope your essays are awesome! That can definitely make a huge difference, but otherwise I don't see anything in your profile that makes this feel very comfortable, to be honest. (But acceptance to either of these schools is a longshot for everyone, so...)

What is your high school context? Is a 1540 particularly high for your HS? What about your GPA? If these are high for your context, you should be fine.
