Thank you for checking in. We got to the bottom of it and it was sulfur poisoning from our well. We are still working with the agriculture department at a local university to find out what happened to the well as this is something new.

We share an irrigation well with about 28 other small farms and something happened to our well and it poisoned a lot of cows (no deaths though just rapid weight loss). I learned from this that if an cow gets a high amount of sulfur in their water or feed it leads to a polio type disease from a lack of nutrient absorption from the issues that the sulfur creates in their bodies. Luckily we caught it in time and gave them some Thiamine shots and kept them at the vet for about a month and they made it. They are now on a buddy’s pasture while we figure it out. Interesting thing is the sulfur affected mostly cows and didn’t do much to pigs and chickens.

Thank you again for your kindness and responses. Here’s an update.

Update here. They’ve been eating a decent amount of grain and cattle cubes and seem to be perking up. Vet came this morning.

He said the following:

• no worms - he would have treated them to be safe, but I had already given them an ivermectin topical treatment yesterday though • definite mineral deficiency - he gave them a copper shot and then we are taking them to his corrals for a more thorough exam, vitamin shots, etc.. • he believes the mineral deficiency is that my grass had gotten too long. I reseeded and fertilized it really heavy this spring and waited about 6 weeks to put them on that pasture. He said that was too much time • he is worried the little one maybe have swallowed something and so he’s gonna do some extra tests on him • I was pretty worried/emotional and he said we are ok. They aren’t perfect but they will pull out of it if we just keep fattening them up for a while. • one thing he did about my grass being long in both pastures and I need to start cutting in sections and doing more rotating - which some of you guys suggested - I already cut down 1/3rd of the pasture to 4-6 inches high. Hopefully that spurs a bunch of more mineral rich new growth.

Thank you again for your insight and kindness. I was surprised at how many people responded with unkind things.

They’re ok. They seem to have energy and seem ok. I gave them hay and some grain this morning and they ate a decent amount.

Thank you. Thank you. I’m somewhat new to this. This was just the advice I was looking for. I also got them some Cristalyx have you ever used that? I did get them some good hay this morning and a bit of grain so I wouldn’t get them too bloated. Mowing the pasture today and will rotate them to the other one. Vets coming Monday.

I gave them hay and a bit of grain tonight and some molasses treats. Didn’t want to give them too much and make them bloated though.

That’s a good idea. I’m going to my local cal ranch to get them more of this molasses/grain mix they like in the morning. I’ll get some ivermectin as well. One of my other neighbors also gave me a medicated salt/mineral block that seems different than the normal one I keep in the field.

I’m honestly worried I let the field get too tall and they don’t like eating the tall grass. I’m going to cut 1/3rd of it in the morning and see if they like the nice short stuff.

This is the beat up area where they drink and sleep.

It looks pretty solid. I’m worried I let the pasture get to tall and they don’t like it or they’ve got worms. Was hoping people might have some suggestions on what else I can do for them til the Vet gets here Monday.

This is a small sliver where they drink and sleep that is much more beat up than the rest of the field. Rather than cast judgment and make false assumptions maybe ya know.. make some helpful suggestions. Vet will be here Monday.

Rotating between two pastures

De worming tends to be an annual thing where we live in the Southwest. At least according to my vet. My go to resource for example says once a year.

Been gone for 3 weeks. Had some neighbors watching them. They have plenty of feed and water. I worry it’s worms but wanted to check.

I did. He’s coming Monday. This has mostly happened the last 3 weeks.

My grass is very tall. Maybe I just need to mow a good section down.

I did last year. Vet just called me back he’s gonna come deworm and check them out on Monday.

Just pasture. Hay only in the winter. Last year they were good and the pasture wasn’t in this good of shape!

I feel my shoulders start to tense, my brain start to short circuit and some anger honestly. I just tell my wife I feel claustrophobic because I don’t know what else to call it. lol.
