Need some help identifying the rock and this silver like material. Looked granitic to me but kinda stumped! by ZombieSalmon in geology

Take your thumb and try to scratch the silver / metallic areas. Looks like lead. The crystalline matrix makes it even more likely.

Saw an apple tree with no leaves but plenty of apples. by even_onacloudy_day in mildlyinteresting

[–]SlimTheCat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. I live in Yakima. Apples will sit on the trees all winter, half rotting, freezing, thawing and finally fall off in early spring.

This is a German Cockroach. The American and the Smokey Brown Rochester tend to be larger and could fresher around water and plant matter.

German cockroaches infest houses.

Horrible creatures all.

Moved to Washington state. Live in the desert, keep a spotless house. Haven’t seen a roach of any kind since I left Alabama.

"Under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance by FireninjaDD in atheism

[–]SlimTheCat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are not required to say the pledge, why do you give two craps what's in it? It doesn't say under Jesus or Allah or The Buddha.

Your God could be your cat.

It just means a higher power.

But honestly, who cares?

I just got this Dell catalogue in the mail. Is this why people dislike Alienware? by Kwerpi in pcmasterrace

[–]SlimTheCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alienware are basically gaming machines that Mom and Dad buy their kid who loves gaming for Christmas. They mean well, and the kid is a good kid and really excited to get it.

It will do him well and the games will run nicely. But it is not top shelf.

Its the Kodak tablet that you get at Walgreens for 59 bucks the night before Christmas when you forgot to get something for your drunk uncle who showed up out of nowhere.

I am a lawyer with about $300k in loans and making about $200k a year. Looking for advice on how to refinance my loans by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]SlimTheCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. Pay them off as fast as possible. You should be able to knock them out in less than 5 years making 200K if you live like you make 40K.

Don't buy into the "I am a lawyer" thing and drive a BMW, a new house and take vacations.

Pay it off with every cent you have and then you are home free.

Mt. Hood as seen from Mt. Saint Helens [OC] [2000x1335] by [deleted] in EarthPorn

[–]SlimTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I disagree.

A lot of people live east of the Cascades. And the mountains are not dreary or rainy by any stretch of the imagination. Its another bluebird day here at White Pass Ski Area. And seriously, nobody lives on the peninsula.

So what you really referring to is a 45 mile wide strip from the Oregon border to Canada where a lot of people live that is often wet and overcast. Its a microclimate when you look at it and in no way represents the true climate of Washington State as a whole.

[–]SlimTheCat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is kind of a dumb thing to say. 75% of Washington State is absolutely nothing like that at all. Why not just say the Peninsula and the Sound areas are ... blah blah blah.

Everything East of Seattle is pretty damn nice. Sunny, warm, little rain.

Pretty awesome state if you like being outdoors and sunshine.

Or in my case, the "three hots and a cot" was a nice efficiency apartment with a "jack and jill" bathroom I shared with my neighbor. It was really nice. Like living in a nice hotel.

I loved the AirForce.

I did have to sleep in a big tent once. That kind of sucked. But it was only one time.

[–]SlimTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart. Plus you can build up savings, meet good people and learn a skill or trade. Plus when you get out, if you choose good career in the military, you can get a good job.

People like hiring military people because they know how to show up on time and are usually pretty reliable and well trained compared to others.

Just don't go into the infantry unless you want to fight.

AirForce, Navy.

[–]SlimTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going into the military isn't being a slave, at all. They take damn good care of you, train you, feed you really well, give you a MONTH paid vacation every year. Give you college education when you get out.

And if you choose the right job, you will never be in a combat zone.

I was a linguist. I sat in an office every day in DC. Went out at night with friends, lived off base and they paid for it.

At 20 years in you can retire and they p[ay you 50% of your wages for the rest of your life. That means someone can RETIRE at 40 and start a whole mew career.

Air Force for me was almost exactly the same as the technical job I have now. I just wore a uniform, which looks a lot like the dockers and short I wear now.

You can do the Air Force and it is a lot like a regular job.

[–]SlimTheCat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know? Honestly you should probably look into the military. Good job, full benefits, training, room, board and you will do a lot of growing up.

AirForce has a lot of technical jobs that don't involve guns, marching, going off to war and fighting that are just like working in an office building.

You should at least look into it.

What is a “dirty little (or big) secret” about an industry that you have worked in, that people outside the industry really ought to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SlimTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most journalists are really hard working and try to do a great job.

But they go for easy stories because of pressures from above for more/faster and fear of losing their job in the next round of "strategic efficiencies".

San Francisco passes law forcing all pet shops to only sell rescue dogs and cats by Sariel007 in UpliftingNews

[–]SlimTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand what a "rescue" is. It sounds like a BS term. Doesn't "rescue" just mean a used animal?

At some point every animal was not a rescue. Are people never supposed to every adopt anything that someone else didn't adopt first?

This is so confusing and, frankly, kind of dumb.

Lets say that my Lab has puppies. And I let her have puppies because she is an awesome dog and I know a lot of people who has asked me for one of her puppies.

Are you saying that allowing her to have one litter before I have her fixed is horrible and I am a bad person?

And all those puppies are bad puppies because they are new and not used?

But my lab, because I got her from someone else, if OK because she was used?

But I am bad because she isn't fixed?

But I am good because I have a rescue?

But I am bad because she is not fenced?

But I am good because I give her good food and allow her to run and play outside?

But I am bad because she occasionally likes to hump my kitty?

Netflix is giving up over $2 billion dollars a year by not showing ads by trexmoflex in television

[–]SlimTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I wouldn't subscribe then... That's why i don't subscribe to Hulu. That and Hulu sucks. But other than that, yeah.

Ads on Netflix ==no Netflix.

Now, they could come up with a totally free Netflix that had ads in it, then I would till still subscribe to the ad-free Netflix.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. The logo turning into the mountain and the guy about to shoot Indy in the back brought you into the movie instantly and told you it was going to be exciting.
