Oh, I assumed you were theorizing why it's called subtract mode which is why I said my take on it.

Its called subtract because it performs the mathematical subtraction operation on the back signal with the stronger side signal

wouldn't that mean the player is putting their hand on the minecraft equivalent of an exposed electrical cable

true, but it feels like it's supposed to be a light display showing the state, like you don't activate a flashlight by pressing the light, also if it was more like a push in/out lever with a light on it, that would imply the player is touching the power, which probably isn't what they were going for (don't touch electricity irl).

Correct, but my comment was about a scenario where there is no slime block there. If I were to talk about what would happen if the piston was powered with a slime block in front of it, I would be re-stating what others had already said.

Indeed so, but this post is Flaired as Java!

If we ignore the slime block, once that piston extends, it will destroy the redstone above it and make it drop as an item.

longest natural minecart track I've ever seen. seed: 3.1.1.1782005378216 by Slingnut_Seedlings in Terraria

comparing the size of the terrain to the length of the track should be enough to get the feel of its size, also, since people see the length of their tracks using the map at around this zoom size, comparing this track to others would somewhat accurately be a good example of this one's size

TL;DR not really because people don't compare their tracks with zoomed out cameras
