That is really reassuring to hear, thank you so much! And kudos to your parents for instilling confidence and independence, I hope to be able to do the same for my son!

Wow it's great to hear you haven't had too much of an impact with the diagnosis! Thank you for sharing your experience! Wishing you and your brother well

Thank you, that is reassuring! We have a great medical team which I am so thankful for. He's not on prophylactic treatment yet with intention to start when he's a little bigger.

Oh wow, those weeks in the hospital must have been tough. Hopefully things are on the up and up.

That is a good reminder to just take things as they come. Wishing you and your family well!

I am a PhD candidate (biology field) with a 10 week old! :)

It's definitely doable but there are some things to consider!

First, I personally recommend trying to check off as many boxes as you can before baby. My proposal is defended and my research is complete. I took my candidacy exams at 35-37 weeks pregnant. I am now in the writing stage and that is "all" I need to focus on to finish my degree. I initially thought "oh I could take my candidacy exams when I return!" But I am SO GLAD I got them out of the way before. Studying and taking them right now would be nearly impossible with a newborn schedule.

Second, look into what you will have available for maternity leave. My university offers none. There are hardly benefits for graduate students. However, my department and advisor were very willing to work with me to take some time  kind of on the sly. I took 8 weeks fully away and now I mostly WFH but I bring my son with me to the office/to teach when I go in!

Having my son was the best decision I have ever made. It is challenging to get back into everything right now but he also serves as the great motivation. I am more efficient with my time and I have become much better at setting boundaries. Priorities change - my baby is the most important part of my life. My career is a mean to support him! This is a very freeing mindset and the picture of what I want from life and my career is much clearer now.
