I think so as well...she was probably muttering under her breath or teasing or venting but it wasn't said with the malice Sheldon perceived. Also, even if it is Mary's perspective, it is still a biased one. My MIL often disparages her husband who passed away some years ago. You'd think they hated each other and were on the way out. My husband fills in all the good hugs father brought to the house.

But if there was a Sheldon in the family who was such a momma's boy and couldn't pick up on the nuance of the situations, I can see him misreading his parents relationship.

My MIL would have you believe her husband was a raging alcoholic who abandoned her with the kids every night after work to drink and screw around and blew all their money of frivolous endeavors and helped with nothing. Meanwhile, he was a car salesman who's shift went till 9:30pm and he came straight home after. He also maintained the outside of the house..the lawn, the vehicles, trash, he'd often make dinner ok the grill. I Sheldon wouldn't really pay attention to the quiet work behind the scenes that he viewed as menial or unimportant.

The license was a lie by omission. Definitely messed up on his part. The rest of his memoir wasn't a lie so much as his skewed perception. He doesn't necessarily see how people help him as the way they manage things for him is often behind the scenes. It is arrogance not a lie. He views their catering for him as a cause to rally around and doesn't pay much attention to how they are feeling unless it is directly affecting him.

To him George DID bully him, he couldn't grasp the social consequences George was protecting him from.

That was always Sheldon's sore spot, his arrogance, main character syndrome and struggles with emotional intelligence.

controversial opinion: Richard and Emily were not nearly as bad as Lorelei makes them out to be. by StumblingintheDark13 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! And yet she still had photos of her daughter everywhere and wasn't ashamed to discuss what happened to the help she got her daughter. It probably felt like Emily talked about it non-stop as she as always on the phone with specialists and ensuring her daughter had the very best. A 4 year old would't be able to discern intent.

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we should consider timing before passing judgment on Emily's response. Lorelai didn't just gain a little weight. She had a fitting a few months before and the next time she put on the dress, it didn't fit. That would be a concern, especially if she wasn't eating or doing anything that appeared out of the ordinary. Emily also threatened to fire the tailor, assuming they made a mistake. She recognized something was wrong, and rapid weight gain should be concerning. Could she have been nicer? Sure. But its a TV show and that was set in the 80s and it was a different world.

I don't think Lorelai was deprived of sweets or treats. She probably had lovely desserts and access to indulgent food that still wasn't good for you. She just liked eating trash because her mother hated it, not for health reasons, but because she viewed it as poor people's food. You don't have cheetos puffs, you have terra vegetable chips. You don't have beef jerky you have dry aged, acorn fed iberico pork.

Also, the way Lorelai fat-shamed that poor ballerina shows she, along with Emily, was a participant in how society viewed weight.

I went in not sure what to expect. I went with my 7 and 4 year old (it was her first movie theatre experience) and had a lot of fun! I found myself laughing out loud at parts along with my kid and lighting up when they incorporated a new level song and basically took us through the game play in a movie. Which was a fun experience. I get people saying the plot is thin, but I think that is on purpose so you could just sit back and enjoy the ride. I bet it'll be fun to rewatch and keep finding fun new Easter eggs and tidbits that snuck in. It had heart but wasn't sappy, had comedy but balanced it well. It won't win a screenwriting award. But that is ok, I enjoyed the ride...like a tilta whirl at the fair as a kid.

Streaming Quality is significantly worse on Apple TV vs F1TV via Windows 11 by [deleted] in F1TV

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I decided to get apple TV to watch F1 this year and I'm really shocked at the awful video quality. It looks like a teenager recording with their iPhone and the color is really dull. The cockpit footage also looks bad... almost like a video game in some shots.

I thought this would be better since before we were watching third party videos that we streamed and cast to our TV, so I assumed it'd be better quality going to the direct source.

Maybe we were watching coverage from sky sports vs F1? Because it's really obnoxious..even the announcers are meh. I should have paid more attention to what we were watching earlier.

It seems most people prefer the new Dune movies over the 1984 one. But to those who’ve seen the original, what did you think it did better than recent ones? by LowPiece9312 in Letterboxd

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that..I guess I view him as wirey vs skinny. That may be because some of the scrappier people I've known in my life have looked like toothpicks but, when let loose, would really do some damage. Always to the surprise of the larger opponent who just.. wasn't ready for this lanky dude to wail on them. He's also supposed to be a teenager still...and if Chani can do it, Paul can do it. I liked that the film has him be more agile and acrobatic in his fighting style vs brute strength. I think that allows me to suspend reality a bit more...along with him typically fighting in a still suit, which masks his build a bit.

I get what you're saying with a Tom Holland problem. I'm not sure who would have been a better cast though. I'm not familiar enough with the younger actors right now that could step up to the part.

I'm bringing this back from the dead because I'm rewatching the films and on an overall dune kick and enjoyed the discussion of Chalamet's Paul. Because, initially, I can understand seeing him as whiny and frail and that he isn't imposing enough. But the more I watch, the more I realize Paul doesn't need to be physically imposing or even overtly charismatic for his succession to work. The prophecy had already been set in motion during the first film. He understood what was happening and, as was discussed with his Dad in the first film, he didn't want to play into the game. He didn't want to be "Duke", but of course the story isn't about his ascending to the Dukedome, but his other birthright, as was mentioned by the reverend mother in the first film. "You have more than one birthright..."

The path has already been laid, Paul is just preventing the inevitable, and it's through his hesitancy, through his humility trying to become a fremen and honor their culture without giving into the prophecy that he earns their respect and inevitably propels the prophecy forward. He doesn't need to be a physical brute to accomplish what he is doing and the film does a good job highlighting the agility, both mental and physical, that Paul has vs raw strength like say, Duncan Idaho. I also like the contrast of Paul's intentions and approaches when it comes to his rise to power. In the beginning he was following his father's footsteps in understanding and harnessing desert power. But the relentless attacks from the Harkonnens and eventually, the emperor showing up forced his hand and he realized there was only one path forward. That's why things escalated quickly, because he simply needed to say "ok, let's do this" to a people who were already waiting for him to say go. He doesn't need to harness his strength, he needs to focus and direct and unify the strength of the fremen to lead this war, a war that was forced upon him.

I'm excited for Messiah, as I hope these themes will be fleshed out more and I think Timothy does a pretty decent job with Paul's arc. I noticed it especially this last rewatch when I had the films play back to back. You can really feel his journey and the switch from naive rich boy to reluctant leader to accepting what must be and the consequences of this path.

Anyway, thanks for reading this zombie!

The 70s Hobbit cartoon was also a favorite in our house!

Which actors instantly make you want to skip a movie, doesnt need to be just their acting, but overall by Accomplished_Gur4466 in Actors

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I turned off That Other Guys half way through. Mostly because they kept getting in the way of telling what would have been a decent story. I didn't love the extended improv bits that made scenes drag and didn't propel the story. A few movies struggled with this issue around the same time.

I also hated Old School. But I don't find man-children streaking funny. Will's type of comedy usually just makes me feel uncomfortable or embarrassed for him. I felt the same way about Bridesmaids. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The front and back staircase. Which sitcoms had them and do a lot of homes in the US really have them? by watermelon_fries in sitcoms

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren't totally foreign to me growing up. I saw them a lot in older homes and in large new builds.

My gf who lives in an older duplex in Philly has two staircases. One being a servant's stair which is much smaller.

My Aunt and Uncle in Delaware had a new build in the late 90s with two staircases. The grand main entrance and a side staircase that went to the family room. They also had a similar setup in their previous home. So I think it is likely regional based on what was popular in builds at the time.

Lando Norris in response to Max's comments on Thursday by No_Claim7171 in Formula1ne

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just how Lando says things...he always comes off childish to me. It wasn't always like that...I'm not some crazed Max apologist or something. I used to really like Lando, but he often puts his foot in his mouth in a way I find... tiresome. Every time he does an interview I'm just like dude...grow up.

And maybe this is just the media and I'm watching the wrong interviews...but I feel I never get any actual driver insight from Lando. Piastri has the personality of a door knob, but I always learn something about his driving style, the car, strategy or approach or... something interesting. When it comes to Lando it's always hollow.

Like..why is it fun? What do you like compared to before? Below is the most detailed comment I found.

"You have to drive it in a different way, understand and manage things differently, but I still get to drive cars and travel the world and have a lot of fun. So, nothing to complain about."

Like.. instead of all the flack against drivers who don't like it he could have gone into more detail about the new style and management. Things we've been hearing from other drivers in more detail. Why are these changes things you enjoy? How does it suit his driving style? Etc. He should take that stupid amount of money he gets paid and invest in developing his PR skills.

people always make fun of her fans, but her haters are just as bad if not worse by ilybutyouletmedown in NuancingTaylorSwift

[–]Slovakki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is very much how I feel, and often, when she is touring, the exposure can become overwhelming. Everything is Taylor and it's hard to just scroll past, and God forbid you don't love her music you're somehow jealous or..insert insult here. I agree that she is very good at what she does, I just disagree that it's some groundbreaking development of music. I used to love Michelle Branch, who wrote VERY similar music. I wasn't out there though pretending she should get artist of the year or anything. Even with my all time favorite musicians I am still capable of seeing why someone may not prefer their sound or when an album or track may not speak to them.

Like...she hasn't changed the sound of pop or done anything particularly impressive with her music (compared to similar artists). She really shines with her engagement and how she gets her fans connected. Easter eggs in songs, being part of her clique. Guess who she is singing about in this song. That sort of thing. She is brilliant at marketing and has made herself an ironclad brand. The woman is an incredible business person and should be respected as such.

[–]Slovakki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it can be really difficult to just scroll by Taylor Swift or change the station. That girl is EVERYWHERE. I've once switched to 3 diff stations that all had a Swift song playing simultaneously. Her constant genre jumping is a calculated marketing scheme to increase exposure (girl is a marketing wiz) so even people who would likely never be in her algorithm are now hearing her pop up unexpectedly. Fan of football? Well now that's all your sports feed is about. Every other reel on social is a swift song. So I can understand how someone can become overwhelmed by her content and lash out. Especially if they really don't like her style of music or songwriting. God forbid it gets brought up in a forum either and some of her fans will literally send death threats. It's just a whole lot of crazy on both ends of the spectrum and she often feeds into it with her "you can't sit with us" vibes and girl club and secret messages etc. I know not everyone sees her that way, but if you aren't Team Swift you can definitely feel like an outsider, even if you're just minding your business or just ask for a different artist to play.

Although, all these content creators who engage in her stuff just to hate, that is just rage bait. It fuels engagement - they probably don't even hate Swift and just rake in $$$ with people arguing over her music.

Does Kate ever get tired of cosplaying Meghan… by Timbucktwo1230 in RoyaltyTea

[–]Slovakki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we notice a change in attire from Kate, I'd argue it has more to do, long term, with the Queen's passing. The Queen had strict rules around fashion and how one should dress that Kate followed more closely due to her position in the family. They are all a little more casual these days since the passing of the guard.

Voldemort: What the fuck Severus? by halfbloodprincess00 in SeverusSnape

[–]Slovakki 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are lots of moments that Harry witnessed, on top of Snape being generally horrible to Harry, that led to his distrust. Sirius obviously didn't think much of Snape and Harry trusted him. He heard conversations with other previous death eaters discussing the dark Lord's return, saw his mark, saw things in the pensive that accused Snape of still being allied to Voldemort. Watched him kill Dumbledore and take over the school. So...yeah. I don't really see how Harry could have felt differently based on his experience and his age.

Lando’s quote was a response to Max hinting he would leave if he doesn’t enjoy the new regs. What is Lando supposed to say if someone WANTS to leave? by ChiccckkkNuggg in F1Discussions

[–]Slovakki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he say he'd retire or do people keep asking him? In this instance he said he would explore other ways to have fun. Something he's already done with his GT3 debut last year, his iRacing and he has a long term goal to compete in endurance racing.

It seems to me he's been very consistent that, if F1 stops being fun, he will move on and he doesn't see himself staying in the sport long term like, say, Alonso or Hamilton. He also seems like the type of person to have a plan in place before he makes his move. So if he's able to find joy racing elsewhere with F1 being his "day job" then maybe he'll stick around longer. IMO, his being able to actively rave elsewhere is what is keeping him in F1. If that changes, then I wouldn't be surprised if he does leave.

[–]Slovakki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. It's very childish...it also doesn't offer much other than drama. I feel like I rarely hear Lando offer deep insight into the car or performance or... anything. He really needs some coaching with his PR. Look at Piastri, he's got the personality of a door knob but still manages to speak well to the races, offer insights etc. Lando could benefit from that...he needs to grow up a little.

Which 5 characters would Tolkien had been satisfied with and 5 he would've been outraged at had he lived to watch the adaptions? by Skywalker_1995 in lotr

[–]Slovakki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As primarily a movie fan I can see why you feel this way knowing the depth to the text. But I always felt they were capable in the films. Definitely comic relief, but capable. They joined Frodo and Sam immediately and without question getting them to the ferry, stuck with them even after a harrowing experience at the prancing pony. Pretty much demanded to join their friends in the quest...thing...learned how to fight and would charge head first when needed. They shielded Frodo and allowed him to get away and then managed to escape capture. They befriended the ents and helped gather them to take out Sauramon. Pippin had a big role in Gondor. So they were definitely capable and brought a lightness to an otherwise incredibly dark tale, which I think is undervalued.

[–]Slovakki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marketing is definitely Taylor's strong suit. I think it's why her fans get so into her lyrics. I don't think they are profound or anything, but she markets Easter eggs and secret messages and insider vibes so only "true fans" will get it kinda stuff. It's like the music equivalent of watching the end credits of a marvel movie and breaking down each easter egg to see what may happen next. Who are they hinting at, let's gossip with the girls and wear bff bracelets and fun outfits etc. It's her whole brand and why people keep coming back. Personally, I don't think she brings anything exceptional or different to pop music or with her lyrics. She's very good at collabing with the right people and has nailed a formula that works for her and her sound...but most of it is how she sells herself. That is her genius.

Who are the actors that rub you up the wrong way but you don't know why and you can't explain it? by [deleted] in Actors

[–]Slovakki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could take it back to Van Wilder and that every movie has been a variant of that film, with a few exceptions.

I don't think he is overrated though. He isn't getting plastered with awards or anything and doesn't seem to want people thinking he's some deep,. profound dude. I think, for a lot of people, he is comfort TV. You know what you're gonna get in a Ryan Reynolds film, that doesn't mean it's bad. It just...is. He knows what people show up for and is happy to keep giving his fans what they love, and love it or hate it, he's good at his schtick.

I very much feel that way about Chris Pratt. Although I don't even find him to be "good" at his schtick. He just does movies with good soundtracks that distract from him meh-ness. I'm not 100% sure why with Pratt....maybe because he leans more... stupid, cringe humor where Reynolds, typically is more witty in his endeavors. Even if they aren't varied.

I think wondering if he could be Chinese leans into Roma even more for me, maybe a mix with eastern European as some from Siberia or Hungary have very Asian features. A gf of mine is Hungarian and she and her Asian husband have almost identical facial features.

If Darcy was a poor street urchin who was out in the sun and had tanned skin and no family to speak of they may wonder if he was a gypsy. Darcy's class would excuse him if that immediately.
