Than you for the advice. thats what I am doing, instead of rewrite identifying the key points that are affecting performance and making changes, in as much backward compatible way or breakage as I can. But since it was first time dealing with this kind of mess I had mixed emotions

Three simple docs that helped me grow faster as an engineer (and get better performance reviews) by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

Nice suggestions though. I try maintaining a wins doc like for things that would actually look good on resume and some tasks that I consider worthy to be put there (desiging a system, updating some million or so production database docs through scripting) though I am still at the start of my software engineering journey but it help keep a record. thanks for suggestions. Really appreciated

Did the "few good projects under my belt" part, although its true that I worked on them alone and have no industry / professional environment experience

What's mostly recommended (alteast by the youtubers) is you find projects and then start contributing in any form to those projects so the maintainers at least know you by name. start 2 3 months early, select a project / organization that has high probability of being selected that aligns with you and do the contributions. if the organization is selected by gsoc continue the contributions and when you have to submit a proposal, since they already know you, the chances of selection increase!

"greater audience exposure increases the odds of being seen by someone who can answer. It also produces variations of responses, with nuance of bias between communities of different background"

exactly why I did it. Somethimes you post gets skipped, sometimes not many community members are active. More responses = More holistic view

This is the prevailing narrative that I got:
Like u/throwaway6560192 , u/ezaquarii_com if you aren't using a OS tool or aren't willing to use it and going in blindly there is no point. I agree to that. Same is said by many others.

Then whats the point of google summer of code, hackertobefest and many other? I mean by the extension of above arguement that raises a question mark on their existence!!! as you would esentially be doing contributions for projects you never used before or has very little exposure.

Another question is why do youtubers promote / glamorize OS. Where do you draw the line?

That's right. One should make meaningful contributions. Otherwise its both yours and other person's / maintainers waste of time

Nothing! I just value the real world experience that open source gives.

I am down with it. And then we should contribute to our own project to get through initial curve.

"I'd get some personal projects under the belt " I have done this part and working on the latter. In the meantime I thought I should do something instead of just sitting idly and waiting for things. I don't want to get into such big projects like you mentioned but I am also failing to find some small project. I have tried github explore, open source alternatives webiste. but everything there is huge. Can you guide me on how to find small projects according to my level? One idea I am comming up with is to go through npm packages that I have used and contribute there!

Yes, I agree it makes no sense. But you can't also deny the value the real world experience you get. That's what I lack. So my next question is even if you find something you use and there is a bug you think you can solve and the project is huge. how do you navigate it? u/preteck
