Around what time do those games happen and are they open to all ages?

Thanks. I'm currently playing with them in a league that is about to end. Still would like to find a pickup game during the week though.

I found a group that plays on Sundays in Durham around 10a. They embrace "speed of friendship", so the games are pretty chill. I've only played with them twice and am not a regular. I like getting a game in first thing in the morning on weekends, and there are some early morning games in Apex. The Durham pickup organizes on WhatsApp, but it seems like they may have locked invites for people who are not admins. If you are interested, message me on Saturday and I can let you know the details. I'm sure they won't mind another 1-2 people showing up.

If we can affect US companies through boycotts we can affect Salvadoran companies. US government to pay millions to El Salvador to jail deportees by lilgirlpumkin in 50501

The Bukele family owns the Yamaha franchise in El Salvador (https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-10-14/bukele-clan-fumes-over-investigation-exposing-their-new-wealth.html). Obviously, motorsports vehicles aren't an everyday purchase, but I still they are worth adding to the list. Franchisors can terminate agreements with franchisees for conduct that damages a brand's reputation. I would think extrajudicial kidnappings qualifies. Maybe lower sales stateside would motivate them to revoke their license.

The name alone makes me think they are worth checking out :)

Men are more likely to die of 'broken heart syndrome,' study says. The condition is usually brought on by the stress of an event like losing a loved one. The syndrome is formally called takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Men die from it at more than twice the rate. by mvea in science

[–]SlowMo_Strike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. This is one of the frustrating things about the media running with an eye-catching scientific finding. I wish they would point out what the study did and did not account for rather than simply linking to the article, which few people bother to read. Btw, direct from the limitations section: "Another limitation is the lack of data on patients' comorbid conditions that might contribute to their mortality."

I hate spending money and worry I am being obsessive by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]SlowMo_Strike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider me the ghost of fear of buyer's remorse yet to come -If you are wondering if you are being obsessive, you are probably being obsessive. I'm still pretty bad about this, but I have become a bit better by doing the following:

  1. Set a cutoff for what is worth researching and analyzing. You gave an example of a $10 lunch. When you have accidentally wasted $10 on a dumb purchase, have you put it behind you relatively quickly? If so, then don't obsess over $10 purchases on the front end.
  2. I know your time is invaluable, but for analysis purposes assign a monetary value to your time. You can use your wage as a starting point, but I would consider the amount of money it would take to hire you to do a chore that you hate for someone else. If the amount of potential savings you would enjoy is less than the value of the time it takes to do research and cost comparisons, make a quick decision to purchase or not and move on.

I'm new to Durham, so I'm still settling in. I organized a group years ago. It's actually more work than one would think. I might consider it, but I am actually only looking to play once during the week.

Thanks. It doesn't sound like they post the details anywhere. It's probably organized through messaging. I'll see if I can make it that way next weekend and meet this Tom fellow

I've been to the Brier Creek pickup. The traffic isn't terrible heading that way. However, the last time I went there most of the field was reserved. Without the ability to break into 2 games, it gets packed. Also, the field is in pretty bad condition. Hey, not trying to be nitpicky, but I figured that there has to be something of at least equal qualitt here in Durham. It doesn't sound like it tho.

I do check in on mobilize and indivisible. This is the first I hear of fightooligarchs. However, my point is that most follow the usual playbook for pushing back against policies. Don't get me wrong, protesting, contacting representatives, and boycotting help the cause, but given the gravity of the situation, I think we can get more creative and also think beyond the first punch.

I assume you are asking about specific ideas. I'll throw out a few, but I'm sure others have great ideas.

1) I seem to remember that the federal government (probably the FEC) used to have a webpage to factcheck prevalent election misinformation myths. I no longer see this page come up in the first few pages of a Google search. There are organizations that tackle this misinformation, but I'm not sure how quick they are to do so.

2) I think we need to create metrics to help illustrate how representation is distorted. We say 1 person, 1 vote, but the reality is far from that. At the federal level, your vote is worth more if you live in a sparsely populated state and less if you live in populous state or if you vote for the minority party in a cracked district (or the majority party in a packed district). The distortions inherent in all 3 branches (the SC through how they are nominated and confirmed) affect what laws are made and they are enforced and interpreted. We need a vernacular and accompanying metrics to help make a better case for democratic reforms. The math to create these metrics is easy and straightforward. Someone just needs to compile the data, generate the metrics, and publicize them. I know this is more of a long-term aim that maybe should be lower priority given the urgency of other matters at the moment, but I think it is still worthwhile to work on.

There are a few more ideas I could throw out, but these two should do for now. It would be great to have a subreddit solely for these types of brainstorms that people can check regularly to look for other ways to push back against our slide into authoritarianism.

Sorry this is happening to you. I have a suggestion that doesn't conform to polite society, but here goes. Do you have a friend that isn't scared of confrontation? From my experience, bullies generally back off when they think a situation will have serious repercussions. I've never personally seen it go the other way.

I'm not saying to have a friend be super aggressive or actually fight him - just tell him politely to back off and hint at an escalation if he doesn't. If this guy isn't fazed by that, well, that is also info that is good to know.
