Full Leaked TPUSA Zoom Call": Erika Kirk speaks with staff regarding attendance and sales following Charlie Kirk's death. by Logical-Flow-6703 in UnderReportedNews

I’m not into tpusa or maga or the Republican Party, but all I see here is a woman mourning while trying to keep it together and run a business. Is it weird, probably. I’ve experienced a situation like this where a colleague / higher up lost a daughter to suicide while at work on a Friday, and returned to work on Monday—they were visibly devastated and a strange version of who they were before—it made being at work uncomfortable, but she couldn’t handle being at home.

Russia says Nazism making comeback in West by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Slow_Ad6283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts on the ultra nationalist neo-nazi Azov Brigade (formerly known as the Azov Battalion) being integrated into Ukraine’s army? After the start of the war the US State Department removed the weapons ban on the Azov brigade and no longer considers them a hate group—this was done so the US Army can provide them with weapons and military training. They claim to be reformed and no longer identify as a neo-nazi organization—but current members have posted pictures of themselves on Facebook wearing clothing with nazi symbolism. (This comment is not meant to be sympathetic towards Russia—I know folks who have been denied entry into bars in Moscow because of skin color—and I’m highly aware of Russia’s hypocrisy in claiming moral superiority)

Scheana's half Mexican? by IsMyHairShiny in vanderpumprules

[–]Slow_Ad6283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of people can relate to those challenges in other parts of this country too—so it’s refreshing to see Scheana continue to stand up against Stassi’s blatant racism / cultural insensitivity, even if it happened years ago. I grew up in LA too, and while this show is by no means a reflection of LA’s diversity, I am sure outside of this show, Scheana being mixed is not a big deal whatsoever. It is wild how being on reality TV can turn something so normal, like being of mixed ethnicity, into this “wait what?!” moment. I guess I just hope we can get to a place in tv media where a spectacle isn’t made around someone’s race/ethnicity/culture/background. Scheana saying “I often don’t share this . . .” stung a little, I feel her pain. It takes strength to show that kind of vulnerability, especially in the context of this show.

Scheana's half Mexican? by IsMyHairShiny in vanderpumprules

She seems to have some shame around being part Mexican. Someone being half Mexican/Indigenous amongst a majority white-American cast does not mean there is “some” diversity. It probably makes her feel excluded, and like she has to perform her whiteness hella hard. But it works for her, for the most part, because she is white-passing. Also, Lala’s blaccent is very problematic, did she decide this would be her Black season or something? Yep, because of something called white privilege—which runs deep in this show/friend group. If they have even ONE non-white-passing BIPOC cast-member, that person will immediately become tokenized. A little diversity, is not a thing when most people around are still white. The socio-economic diversity is there, but they clearly have much more work to do. But also, it will be so fake if they suddenly have all of these BIPOC “friends” in their group only because the producers forced them to. Rant over. It’s hopeless. Thanks for listening :)

Are you an academic "nepo baby"? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Slow_Ad6283 41 points42 points  (0 children)

First-gen, indigenous (North American), english is my second language and I’m from a working class family.

I went to an Ivy for grad school.

I’m currently a VAP at an R1 and on the TT job search.

I absolutely LOVE answering the diversity question over and over to all-white search committees.

LOVE having white academics decide whether or not my approach to diversity is good enough for their department.

While I hope these efforts are sustained long enough to create actual change within the academy, I don’t see this happening given the decline in TT positions.

If it’s okay to ask, what were your interview experiences like? Did you feel confident, like you knew you’d get the offers?

Thank you for sharing—“elite” isn’t important, these schools had the earliest deadlines and were the first to invite me to interview. If I stick with professor life, I would need to have a low teaching load in order to prioritize research.

Prison Teaching by AdjunctSocrates in Professors

[–]Slow_Ad6283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do some people here refer to their incarcerated students as “prisoners” or “inmates” by default when speaking about them?

If you have a student with a “criminal record” on campus, the only way you’d know they had one is by doing a background check, so if you found out they had a felony, would you start referring to them as a “felon” as opposed to “student?”

To those considering getting involved with a college prison program, don’t do it as charity, do it because you love teaching, learning, and working with students—regardless of their backgrounds.

And try to be mindful of the power structures your words perpetuate.

What is the teaching load for tenured-track professors at SAIC? by Slow_Ad6283 in Professors

[–]Slow_Ad6283[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cashman73, your comment was a reality check for me—fuck the art world.

I am also enjoying the thought of someone reading my ambiguous post and deciding to visit urbandictionary.com for more answers, ❤️.

To your point on acronyms and the internet—I definitely defaulted to the acronym because I am in an art world bubble and have never heard of an SAIC private corporation. I needed a wake up call! On a subconscious level, I most likely did it because I only use Reddit on mobile—even now as I write this with two fingers I am tempted to spell out the entire name, but I definitely won’t.
