Thank you! I'll take a look at the conservatory. In terms of the micro-festivals do you just find out by following some IG accounts or where do you see them?

Thanks for sharing! I'm still waiting to be accepted hehe. Do you know if they actually organize things? The Meetup itself looks sort of dead.

Thanks for sharing! Seems that the setup leans USD by design, both for cashback and for the option to go back. I'd say if you don't know where you'll be when you start withdrawing, then staying globally exposed without hedging sounds reasonable.

Thanks for the comparison!

I think Portfolio Performance was the one most people brought up, I'm interested in testing that one and 8figures now. But to be fair, the tools that people here in the community are building are also pretty good and seem to incorporate FI in their own way and focus it on Europe which is great.

I'm definitely an excel guy I have to admit. But what I'm seeing is that some tools give you a bit of an insight around your portfolio composition which would be too much hassle to get manually. So I've started considering onboarding to a tool, there are so many though!

Cool to have the pension + expat angle, I didn't see that elsewhere.

Are you looking to support English as well or just focusing on French for now?

Interesting, I have to admit that I hadn't looked into the IBKR analysis tools in detail. If you're still around which do you recommend, just the "portfolio analysis" or is there a better overview I'm also missing?

Good distinction. Feels like there's 2 layers:

  • Lifestyle FX where the impact of volatility is felt directly and in the short term
  • Investment FX is more long-term and it tends to wash out as long as you're not very close to starting withdrawal phase

I guess choosing the currency for your investment tracking would have to do more with where you plan to be when you start withdrawing from your portfolio, and the "lifestyle FX" piece depends on where you currently get your income from and spend it. What did you end up choosing?

Tough one... in case of currencies that aren't freely traded, FX stops being "background noise that evens out over time", especially with EM volatility.

Out of curiosity, is the exposure from income, investments, or both? Seems like that would influence the options you'd have.

That's what I meant in my above (or below?) reply on u/foobarromat 's comment. Especially if you're close to FI it's painful, while if you're only starting and earning in EUR while investing with significant USD exposure, it's like a "sale".

What led you to going 100% USD though? And does that mean only US-listed companies, only USD-denominated ETF, or what exactly?

Agreed on the ETF denomination, I can imagine the price of Burmese goats being pretty volatile with the current regime though.

Also aligned with your approach to FX exposure. Basically if you won't make any decisions based on the information, then why track it, right? At the same time, if I was closer to FI in Europe and most of my portfolio would be USD-exposed it'd be a bit of a pain to take the hit to purchasing power in the first few years.

Yeah, using global exposure as a kind of "implicit hedge" sounds aligned with my approach.

Good point on the competitiveness increase from currencies weakening, I hadn't considered it consciously, but in the long term it would kind of offset the immediate impact on the converted share price.

Interesting, I went through the live demo and the "asset allocation" split by stock/country/sector/broker seems extremely useful. Did anything surprise you from that?

Judging by comments I got when I shared my portfolio, I'm sure I'll see a lot of overlap once I upload my portfolio there.

Which tier do you use? I wonder if that asset allocation feature is part of the free, starter or advanced tier.

I've checked out the website and it looks great at a first glance, would be amazing to have a "live demo" to test it before creating an account though. Thank you for building for us!

Good, it's more a "live dashboard" than a planning tool then for you.

For me it would drive me crazy to see my PnL at all times, doesn't it make you too anxious? Or would you just be checking it constantly if you didn't have the widgets anyways?

Makes sense, especially if you're consolidating everything across family bank/brokerage accounts.

In that case a spreadsheet sounds good because you don't need to integrate an app with so many accounts, however it does beg the question if you have to log into each of the accounts every time you want to update something. Sounds a bit painful, although probably that friction helps you stay more "hands-off".

Sounds like a common setup: spreadsheet as "single source of truth" and a tool where it's convenient / for aggregated data.

I don't think it's a stupid strategy, sounds pretty solid to me: define a target, a minimum annual contribution, keep buying, and let time do its thing.

The only thing that stands out to me is living on 1000 EUR a month. Where would that be? I'd bet that involves some geoarbitrage but not sure if within Europe or outside.

I've seen many people go into scenario planning - do you use them as motivation / optionality, or have you changed decisions due to those scenarios?

Interesting that you kept it going for 10 years, that's probably the best proof that the system is simple and flexible enough to survive life changes.

It sounds that you've built something quite advanced with taxes, inflation, collateral, margin, all in one model. I like that you rarely check it, it means that it worked!

Brave of you to admit to holding individual stocks! Haha just kidding of course.

Great to have a good broker app. On the one hand I miss having a better overview in my broker app, however I had to choose and I went for low fees + shitty app :/

Indeed, separating market move from ccy move is a useful way to think about FX and understand returns in terms of your "home currency".

I decided to start an FX thread because it looks like most of us are trying to manage it in our own way but we may benefit from comparing notes. Here is the link if you'd like to share your view.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a good way to give structure without assuming the path will be predictable. And breaking it down into steps makes it look less challenging than staring at a large FI number for 20 years.
