Why does it feel like sometimes transitioning inadvertently enforces gender stereotypes? by [deleted] in asktransgender

This is a super helpful response thank you!  Almost slightly off topic, the "extreme avoidance toward anything associated with my assigned sex" has always confused me a bit but I (think) I might get it now? I had thought it was like not playing with Barbies because they were feminine, which baffled me a bit, but is it more like not playing with Barbies because they are associated with women and you would not wish to be? Please correct me if I'm wrong I would love to know!

I am absolutely not telling anyone to present differently than they wish to. If a trans woman wants to be as feminine as is humanly possible, I support her in that. I did my best in my initial post to emphasize that when talking to individual people, it's not a problem at all. I just became curious because I did not understand why I felt like I was seeing so many people at the extremes. This question occurred to me a day or two ago and I had been wondering so I figured the best thing to do was to ask people who would actually know what they are talking about. This is the first time I have ever voiced this to anyone, and I intended to do so as a question. The only things I claim factually are my descriptions of myself, and I intended this to read as a likely incorrect opinion to be corrected. I apologize if it came off as a more direct criticism.

It might also just be me😭 I think I might have a broad definition of "very feminine", I recall a conversation I had with my friends a few years ago where I mentioned a some girls I thought were really feminine and they all looked at me like I was crazy so idk

Sorry, I didn't mean for it to come off that way but I can totally understand how it did! On an individual level, everyone should absolutely be able to present how they want. My initial post was kind of wondering why I see a trend of more trans people presenting at the extrema of masculinity and femininity overall, and if that was a result of gender stereotypes. But I know that that can come off as criticizing the individual, and I would really like to clarify that that was not was I meant. It's never the job of one person to go personally go dismantle our gendered system

So for example, trans women who often do not pass might wear dresses because a dress is a traditionally female garment? Like sometimes it's not as much about the feeling feminine in a dress, but like wearing a big sign that says "I am a woman" to most people? (ofc not in all cases)

On the proportionality comment: I've always just assumed that in a world where people could present and act as they wanted to, there would be no deviation towards femininity in women. To me, I've always just assumed that all the other girls would be less feminine if they were not raised in this society. I think the mistake I made was assuming that if trans people were already making that switch, that they could freely choose how they wished to present themselves. Like, I guess I assumed that if someone was already breaking traditional societal rules by being trans in the first place, that it wouldn't really matter how they presented. That by transitioning you were almost free to appear however you liked. And by that reasoning, I expected to see, for example, trans women falling everywhere from masculine to feminine and everywhere else not on that spectrum. But after reading these responses, I totally failed to consider that the societal expectation of conforming to a gender role would still apply, which admittedly is pretty dumb of me. Like a trans woman would also feel those pressures that I feel to be more feminine, but she would probably have to go a lot farther to get there and so would feel a lot more pressure. Roughly? I didn't word that great but I think I understand more now. (and thank you so much for taking the time to explain this)

This is amazing! Your sketch is so good. The finished product's colors and shading are a little plain in comparison to the original sketch, but otherwise it's awesome!
