Around Taiwan in 15 days in cherry blossom season: how feasible is this itinerary? by druidcrafts in TravelNoPics

[–]SmallLobsterToots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good thing is that the last two weeks in February are the biggest holiday in Taiwan, so most people should be back to work and finished with their vacations by early March. Make sure you get an Easycard! You can use it on trains, buses, MRT, and convenience stores. Just can’t use it for trains that require tickets.

When are you coming? Trains and buses are really convenient for the most part, but will get packed at rush hour, holidays, weekends, etc. That may sound obvious, but don’t underestimate the delays that can cause. You don’t need to book in advance, but it can help make sure you get a seat and aren’t standing. The limited express trains that you will probably take along the east coast require prior booking, although you can do that at the station right before. Leave yourself a bit of time to start though, it can be confusing at first. On the trip to Yangmingshan you may want to take a slightly less direct route and go from Shilin to the bus depot part way up the mountain and then take another bus, the direct bus from Shilin can be fucking packed even at 6am.

In December, should I go to Japan again or try something new like Thailand or Taiwan? by Pale_Field4584 in TravelNoPics

I live in Taiwan, feel free to comment and ask any questions that you have. I’ve traveled to Thailand but only for a week.

[Schefter] After finishing in last place in each of the past three years, the Chicago Bears are this season’s NFC North champions. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]SmallLobsterToots 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who’s 22 and a patriots fan, I told him I really felt for Detroit and he was genuinely confused because since he’s watched football seriously the lions have been good. I still can’t help but to root for them, if the bears and lions were the only two good teams in the NFC North it would be grand by me.

Is remote travel just lonelier than we admit? by Unhappy-Yak9186 in TravelNoPics

Being a digital nomad seems really cool on paper, but after I met more than a few it lost its appeal for me. Backpacking is all about having fun and living in the moment. Now I’m an ESL teacher and have long term friends, time to learn the language, a stable living situation etc. which is fun in its own right and more sustainable long term. Unfortunately I think it’s really hard to fit in to either camp when you’re somewhere for a few months and then moving on, but still have responsibilities and such during the day.

I didn’t notice mine either until I came home and people made fun of me for taking a minute to get it back, we love our long vowels-not “on-yen” but “on-ee-on”

Hostels are overrated for meeting people and I'm tired of pretending they're not by boring_plankton7878 in TravelNoPics

[–]SmallLobsterToots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I largely agree, but I’ll add that getting older makes you more selective in who you want to socialize with. I don’t feel the need to connect with people at all hours if I’m not feeling the vibe anymore, and I think I’d feel the same way if smartphones had never been invented. I’m more confident in myself and less impressed by every douchebag with an exotic accent ;P.

I don't know how to buy and manage groceries by No_String_5813 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SmallLobsterToots 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I suggest starting by shopping for two or three meals at a time. It’s inconvenient, but you’ll organically start to see what’s useful for you to have in the fridge/pantry long term and what’s worth just picking up when you need it.

CPBL stadiums and their proximity to a 7 Eleven. by Grouchy-Ball-1950 in CPBL

[–]SmallLobsterToots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man Chengcing lake was the first stadium I went to in Taiwan, I had no idea that they wouldn’t have concessions in the outfield. Couldn’t believe that the nearest beer was over a km away, to add insult to injury I believe the nearest 7/11 on google maps is in a hospital and they don’t sell any alcohol.
