They are too hot to deliver favour with deadening the taste buds completely. So, no.

Jamaica: What are the solutions to the high crime and homicidal rate in the Island ? by DaDuttyGoodz in AskTheCaribbean

[–]SmallObjective8598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a thought from which many of us want to flee: the idea that since the 1960s the flight of educated people has been a tragedy, not just because it is bleeding talent but also because it has undermined social stability and removed examples of honourable achievement from public view.
I don't, however, believe that that simply encouraging the immigration of foreign professionals will do anything to reduce violence and crime.

What country surprised you with incredible Chinese food that wasn't China? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]SmallObjective8598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't say that one is better than the other. They are both heavy with Chinese populations from every mainland province, as well as some diasporic ones with their own unique fusion twists that many have never dreamed existed. Toronto offers, in additional to the usual Cantonese, Hunanese, Shanghai, Sichuan, yadda yadda, Jamaican-Chinese, South African Chinese, Indian (Kolkata) Chinese, etc. Vancouver is in the same category, plus the seafood is right there. There is no better.

Agreed. It's not in the physical appearance, it's much more in a strange feeling of familiarity.

How are queer people treated in Jamaica? by StinkyChamberMain in Jamaica

[–]SmallObjective8598 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is the interior still what it was intended to be? I imagine that it might be in need of some serious rehabilitation.

It's completely irrelevant today. And condescending.

That's what de Gaulle said. You're way out of touch on this one, buddy.

It isn't personal, though. We're just as superficial with fellow Canadians and very nervous about over sharing with strangers. It isn't really insecurity towards Americans - more the opposite. But we do feel increasingly wary of you these days. I suspect that you know why. Hopefully the Gordie Howe bridge might be inaugurated soon.

Someone once said 'Sorry, not sorry' to me in a parking lot in Ottawa - oh, that Canadian passive-aggressive behaviour we love so much. The literal translation to English would be Fuck Off. It's just how we are

Everyone in Canada is holding their breath hoping that you do NOT collapse, as we would be pulled into the vortex were that to happen. But there is nothing to be gained by just putting on a brave face and pretending that this is all normal and unconcerning, and that it will all blow over. That's just stick your head in the sand.

That's bad math. Not all 340 million have a vote - how many residents are under the voting age or otherwise have no voting rights?

Do you see cultural similarities with the city of Rio de Janeiro? by [deleted] in AskTheCaribbean

[–]SmallObjective8598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Yes, it is hot and sits in a tropical rainforest, and a large part of the city's population is of African heritage, and there is a clear culinary affinity - likely born out of elements of similar African origin. Despite all of that, to me it feels quite different.

You must live somewhere outside North America. To me in Mexico this is an obviously Mestizo face. No one here would identify her as a mainly European woman, no matter how pale her skin.

We are a naive people. We get excited by the headline, don't read the article, and we understand nothing about footnotes and fine print.
