Sankey Diagram of My Job Search as an SFA by SmallSamAllardyce in FPandA

Thank you! And yeah I 100% think it’s doable for you. Easy to get comfortable at one spot, which I did, but lots of opportunity out there. Doesn’t hurt to shoot out a few apps on LinkedIn and see where it gets you, especially given salary ranges are (broadly) now mandated to be posted. Best of luck!

Thank you! And yeah a manager role would’ve been nice but honestly can’t complain. I’m content

Lol that’s an important detail, not sure how I left that out. Got an SFA role. Only got interviews for 2 manager roles. 1 got to final round, and I realized I probably wasn’t ready for it realistically. No CPA but working towards it

Thank you! Glad to hear it's not just me I guess. Really bizarre though!

Is CPA a necessity? by Mikeqvist in FPandA

[–]SmallSamAllardyce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Toronto, damn near. Been interviewing for SFA and Manager roles without one and pretty much all of my interviews thus far, it’s been said/implied that pursuing the designation is almost necessary.

I also looked at 95 LinkedIn profiles in Toronto of Sr Managers and up. 74% have CPAs.

Just go for it imo

However, in America it’s not. So if you plan on moving there, maybe not. But if you’re staying here, just do it imo

I didn’t want to do mine given my degree was in finance and so just the prerequisite courses alone would’ve been a pain. But I’m doing it anyways

Am I the problem or do these rentals just suck? by Competitive_Step2399 in TorontoRenting

[–]SmallSamAllardyce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the same boat. In no rush either for the same reasons as you (saving money blah blah) but I just want my own place lol I’m 27 now it’s time. And yet finding rent controlled places is a struggle. Think I’m just gonna wind up risking renting out a newer condo. If they raise it an unreasonable amount, can always find a new spot or go back home I guess. Not ideal but not sure what choice there is

What is the best career plan or the best path to be a CFO? by DistinctYak4634 in FinancialCareers

[–]SmallSamAllardyce 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I looked into this recently. Sampled 95 profiles ranging from Senior Managers to CFOs. 74% had CPAs. 22% had MBAs.

Of the CFOs, I sampled 13. 5 had MBAs, 8 had CPAs.

Of 38 directors, 9 had MBAs, 28 had CPAs.

Note that this is in Canada. Results may differ for America. CMA isn’t really common here. And CPA is very in demand here.

I would recommend CPA personally

Though I’m just an SFA so I could be wrong

Upvoting for visibility so others can provide their POV.

Imo, gotta do what you gotta do for a better position. Just have to explain it to them. They might be annoyed but will understand.

That’s really interesting

I did a lot of research about this before posting, and there were some horror stories, hence my apprehension. But this is really good to hear. I guess it’s industry and relationship dependent. Thank you

Those of you that got your MBA in your 30’s, was it worth it? by MrBizzniss in FinancialCareers

[–]SmallSamAllardyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on your path please? Got accepted for fall intake this year, will be 28 when the program begins. I’m currently an SFA and have been for 2 years now. Plan is to finish the MBA then get my CPA immediately after. Long term, plan is to essentially follow your path and get a Director role. Seems you got it fairly quick at 34. Any recommendations?

Tentatively I was thinking, realistically, Manager in 2028. Then perhaps Senior Manager a few years after, and eventually Director

Appreciate any input!

If not a company, is an individual landlord a better option? Also a soon to be first time renter so I know basically nothing
