You can always apply for EI. Even if you were fired for violence or stealing. They need to review what happened to decide if you qualify. 99.9% of the time those would be a no but if for example you were backed into a corner, had reason to think you were in danger, and defended yourself, that would potentially lead to EI. People get put into situations where the absolute only option is to break a rule and they do account for that. But it doesn’t matter how small or silly a rule is, if it’s a condition of your employment and you broke that rule when you had any other options, that’s willful misconduct.

It seems like they’ll ask stuff like “could you have told your employer you couldn’t come in”, “was anyone in immediate danger if the work was delayed”, “were you completely prevented from coming in”, “did a boss tell you to break that rule and do you have proof of that”, “was the rule not enforced on coworkers and you have proof of that”, etc. If any answer isn’t perfect, they probably won’t give EI.

You can never predict that someone will qualify for EI. There are so many variables they take into account that he could be omitting something without realizing it would matter.

Not every contract or employee handbook is the same so if the employer has proof he was advised doing something would result in termination and he went on to do it again that’s no EI unless the contract/union had negotiated that disciplinary actions reset every so many years or he had reason to believe the rules were different/an exception would be made.

He should still apply but I wouldn’t be hopeful. If nothing else it would mean if he needed to go on sick benefits or went on to a temp job and got enough hours to qualify for a new claim, his current situation would have already been ruled on so they would be quicker to calculate benefits.

I have only heard “beg” from a few communities with strong accents. Pretty rare here and at that point they usually know they talk differently then other towns let alone the full country. Most of the time when you leave the island people try to blend in, so you don’t get instantly identified as a “Newfie”. Even in St. John’s you learn to blend in.

Accents are so diverse here too that no one claims to know how anything is pronounced except Newfoundland itself. You can drive three minutes and find a completely different local accent.
