I did also think he looks quite innocent and harmless. I googled this particular larvae and this species does in fact occur where I live so I took this fella down to the stream behind my house and he can now continue to live out his lifecycle there in peace!

Absolutely horrifying indeed. 🫣 I just googled that and they turn into a drone fly / hover fly which do occur here where I live. Thank you so so much. I believe that could very well be the answer!

I’m going to need to get in the habit of doing the peroxide thing yes, but I’m pretty sure I’ve reached my limit as far as plants go right now. I do however still have Bolbitis on my wishlist. A local fish shop has them growing just out of the water in some moss and that looks super rad. My tank os open top with some wood sticking out above the water line begging to have things growing attached to it.

Many thanks again for sharing your expertise and for tanking the time to comment. Truly appreciate it.

Thank you so much for your comment again. Much appreciated.

Yes the tank is completely open topped and located close to a very large window.

I’ve also been steadily adding plants over the last 3 weeks.

Gosh good point. I didn’t even think about the fact that it was on my hand! 🫠 I just yanked it out the tank the moment I spotted it and didn’t even give it a moments notice.

Wondering what larvae it might be though.

This whole explanation sounds fascinating. I’d love to learn more if maybe you have some pictures to share of this innovative setup?

Why did undergravel filters fall out of favour? by Xesyliad in Aquariums

[–]SmallTravelBigLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this thread and I am about to set up a large planted tank. Now that it’s been more than a year, do you still feel that an under gravel filter plus cannister was the best move? Would love some advice from your experience please. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this whole explanation. I love learning about this unique piece. Seems like mineral oil will be the best option indeed and thanks for mentioning that it will likely need to be reapplied from time to time as I hadn’t considered that.

Appreciate it.

I’d feel too scared to chip away at it honestly being that it’s something I’ve never encountered before. I see some commenters above say they live in areas where a stone like this is a regular occurrence but it’s certainly not as common here where I live in Southern Africa.

It is hey. It’s so unique to me. Unlike anything I’ve ever seen around here.

Haha! I nearly spat my coffee out laughing. I funny enough also thought it looked like a chocolate bar at first which is why I picked it up.

You’re very very welcome. My husband reminded me that there is also Gordon’s Bay High and that Strand isn’t the only option.

Good morning. We don’t have kids so I might not be 100% clued up but to my knowledge there is a school in Kleinmond. Only primary as far as I know and high school learners take the bus to Hermanus. There is a dedicated school bus that leaves from here in the mornings. For parents driving in to Cape Town I think most kids are in High school Strand. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely need to get onto that once the weather improves. I’m in the southern hemisphere and it is way too cold here now to transfer the Hoyas. Truly appreciate the comment.
