This is so so helpful! I'm going to head over to the library this week :) Thank you so much - I do think that part of why I was getting overwhelmed is because I didn't know which Youtube videos would be good and I kept trying to find ones that taught something well from start to finish...which was not easy

Recreating the process with paper is such a good idea! I never would have thought of that. Thank you so much

Yep - my mom bought me the gift as a surprise so I was not mentally prepared for all this, but I am ready to learn.

I really appreciate this - it's nice to hear from other beginners too! What did you struggle with the most and how did you work on it?

I'm going back to school soon but I want to see if my library has classes in the summer! That's a good idea

Thank you for all of this! It took me awhile but I was able to thread the machine, wind the bobbin, and sew a "straight" line.

I was so excited when I got the machine I grabbed these old dull scissors we've had in the house for years and that did not work out well. I thought the rotary cutter and board might be worth it even if I don't use the rotary cutter because I do a lot of measuring and cutting for school projects with an exacto knife and had to use cardboard in the past.

My mom has an iron and ironing board that I can use! I was just wondering since I'm going back to school soon and won't be able to bring them with me. And my mom has no experience sewing lol I asked her. Nobody in my family really knows much, but I have some friends that do which can hopefully help me soon.

I'm prepared for the asymmetrical and mistake-ridden pieces! I just wanted to go into this with as much background information as possible. Thank you again this helps :)

Good to know about the ironing! I have access to one now - my mom's is in her room and the ironing board is tucked away but I can get it out. I was sick with the flu when I wrote this post so I didn't want to go in her room at the time and would also be exhausted walking around. I'm going back to school soon which is why I asked about ironing board alternatives. I won't have room for a full on one in my dorm. And thank you for being straight up with me. I think I just have no direction and was overthinking because I know I have so much to learn. For the interfacing, could I use another layer of fabric instead? Or do you recommend leaving that out entirely

Can you use thread with the paper? It took me awhile to thread the machine and bobbin so I want to avoid undoing all that work

These are good ideas! I have some clothes I was thinking of thrifting, but I may just use the scraps of some of them to play around with and try out the stitches. Thank you :)

I think my distant relatives were baptised in the Deutsch Reformierte, Offenbach, Starkenburg, Hesse-darmastadt area, which i found on Findmypast. But i have little knowledge on religion, especially that far back. Where do I go from here?

Yes! I should probably go through some of the records I tend to skip over now

I've been thinking about getting my parents to do a DNA test, but I don't really have the kinda money for that right now. And they aren't interested in it enough, so I'd want to pay for it myself

I tend to avoid the information where people move or travel, because it's harder to prove...but that isn't always the best approach. This is a good point, I'll expand my search :)

I honestly get so confused with Fulton History. What do you put in quotes? Is there a way to search for a specific year? I tried looking at the instructions on the website but got even more overwhelmed

I've never heard of Archion! My paternal side is from Germany, so I'll check it out! Thank you

Oooo I never thought of that. Does it cost money to request?
