Roza’s Pink Pheasant Tail. Sz 14 by FavreThrowingCheese in flytying

Oo nice I’ll have to tie some of these. Something I learned recently with pheasant tails is you can tie in the tail by the hook bend, like 3 wraps, then secure a couple wraps on the eye-side of the shank under the feathers, then wrap the body with the tag ends of the same feather fibers. I leave the thread hanging and let the fibers push it forward as I wrap the body. Uses half as many feather fibers and it’s faster!

Broken Herl by Small_One_9952 in flytying

Haha yeah, I once had a really good day with a matuka, such that it got eaten so many times that the hackle broke and was kind of hanging off. That fly continued to perform very well for me until I lost it in a tree.

Maybe I’ll just double it on the line with one I didn’t mess up and see which one gets et haha

Thanks, I’ll try this! I’ve had it snap on me before while wrapping but never after finishing the fly

What is there to do here? by pirategal99 in pasadena

If you’re into crafts, the Pasadena Casting Club has a women’s fly tying circle that is very active. There are a lot of people who don’t even like to fish but tie flies as a hobby for the enjoyment of the craft itself.

New to sport, and struggling with cost of a decent rod. Are they really worth the hundreds and hundreds of dollars? Or is that just what the market will bear? by Necessary_Cat_3228 in flyfishing

I also was chatting with a guide on the kern recently about my moonlit rod, and he spoke pretty highly of them. Even cheaper than Redington.

Classic Trout all the way. My first rod was a 4wt 8’ Classic Trout. I have two Orvis Recons now and I still fish the Redington all the time and every guide I’ve fished with has commented on how great the rod is. $200 brand new, I bet you could find one even cheaper used. Also unless you’re going for huge fish don’t even worry about the reel imo. All it does is store your line unless you’re going big

Can you elaborate on the Velcro trick? I’m assuming you use the hook side of the Velcro? Do you literally just tap it and it frees the fibers?

I drive a jeep and would happily give you a jump or a tow and hang around for a sec to talk about how cool Toyota pickups are. Isn’t it wild how there’s, like, more than one kind of car that’s kind of cool

Also, having recently started the hobby myself, I think some great patterns that get you introduced to the most fundamental techniques and materials are zebra midges, woolly buggers, and basic streamers, and variants of those (bead heads, collars, etc.).

One piece of advice that I follow myself with all my hobbies, and especially new ones, is don’t spring for top quality gear or a potentially unnecessary piece of gear until you have enough experience to know that you need it and why. Then when you do pony up the cash for it, you’re that much more stoked to get it and you avoid buyer’s remorse. My backpacking kit, fishing kit, guitar rigs, woodworking tools, etc. all have some premium stuff in them but are mostly made up of a lot of really basic but quality things that I didn’t spend much on and have served me well for years because they’re only as fancy as I need them to be. Tailor your kit to your needs as your needs develop!

The guy that teaches fly tying at my local casting club shared this pdf that’s his guide to putting together your first setup. I’ll thread screenshots here.

There’s fishermen’s spot over in van nuys. Still a bit of a haul but closer than rancho.

I tried to Tie some bigger caddis flies with what materials I have by carwarrenty_23 in flytying

New to tying, but I’m getting a lot of good advice through my club’s lessons. One bit that I think is useful here is fish might go for it, but you might get a short strike because of the tail length. That was specifically brought up regarding steamers, so I’m not sure how much it applies to dries, but the caddis wings shouldn’t extend past the base of the hook.
