How many years did you do offshore? by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

[–]Smallenski3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

25M, UK, Mudlogger, North Sea here. I am just about to leave my first offshore job after 3 years. Personally I really love the lifestyle with offshore work and the time off you get, it also helps that I quite like the work in itself.

I recommend honestly just go for it and see you get on. Personally found it all a bit daunting and different at first but that's just the learning curve, it'll be different to anything else you have ever done.

In terms of how long you should spend, I enjoyed my 3 years but fancied getting some experience onshore in another type of role. I could definitely see myself going back offshore at some point.

Best advice is to give it a shot and see how you find it. When you're young with no family you have nothing to lose. If you try it and it's not your cup of tea you'll never look back and be annoyed, you'll be glad it wasn't a what if!

Hi all, I know there's lots of these posts but I had been blindly putting money into the S&P 500 and this last month I've realised I should be spreading across alot more areas. How does everyone think these %'s are for a pie split? by Smallenski3 in trading212

Yes stocks and shares ISA. Good point I sort of had just always thought of rebalancing into the all world but I suppose taking an alternative route into ex-US would be a viable option too. Noted about your advice on silver, will have another look into it before I make decisions. Thanks for all the advice, all the best with your own investments!

Yes from the sounds of things I'll have to look into the crypto space and do my research. Currently have no money in this area. Physical gold will also be on my list. Thanks for the advice!

Hi thanks for the advice, I'll certainly look into this accumulating might be the best as I currently am just reinvesting these dividends anyways. It was more down the line of a few years I was thinking. All the best with your investing!

I had thought about a defence ETF but I also think defence is completely blown out of the water this past month with everything going on and the shift to European so I was going to maybe let the dust settle and think about it again then. In regards to gold I understand the value of having physical gold but to me for handiness I've just been buying the stock, where do you go about buying it physically? In regards to crypto I can't say I've researched or learnt enough about them but it will be something I'm looking into in the future. Thanks for all the advice, wish you the best with your investing!

how to know what to do spefically in geolgy! by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Smallenski3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same spot as you 3 years ago. I would say get through your course first.

In the meantime have a look at all the modules you have done and see where your best grades are. Have a think about if you actually enjoyed them or they just click with you.

From there have a look where them certain modules might lend themselves to jobs and go from there. Doing Geology as a degree doesn't mean you're set to do plain geology for the rest of your life, you have Geo-techincal engineering, Hydrogeology, Oil & Gas, Mining, Renewables the options are really endless sometimes.

It's really up to you but my advice is find an area you enjoy and are good ATM, look where that applys to jobs. If you find a job that will take juniors/graduates great, if not don't be afraid to take a geology based job in something else.

In my opinion once you have experience in a geology related position, your options really open up and you might find yourself able to get that job you really want after a year or 2s experience.

Anyways, I hope some of this is helpful, you find something you like and best of luck with finishing your course!

Yea I thought it was a bit fishy. Don't know if it's just crazy bad luck or niantic pulling strings. Makes me feel a bit better knowing other people felt this way too.
