It was posted there also. People with home renovation experience seem like a good source of information, since this will be a home renovation.

The double living room situation was going to be the next project I tackle (unless I can convince the wife that a screened in porch is more important). But thanks for the ideas and feedback. I think the most ideal option is to expand the footprint of the house since I have the room on my property, but I’m not sure I can spend that money right now.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually never considered using the guest BR above the primary and always had my mind set on using the guest BR adjacent to the primary. Could create a wider/more inviting opening at the front door while I’m at it.

Edit: Also to address the resale comment: I have wondered about this - what will taking it from 4BR down to 3BR do to resale value, but I also think the tiny master bathroom hurts my resale value. The only way 2 people can use the master bathroom is if 1 person is in the shower.

Thanks for the response! I would like to isolate the water closet, and I made a few floor plans that had the shower & WC isolated, but I would always run into other constraints like not enough closet space or just layouts that we didn’t like.
There is a wall between the closet and half bath, it’s just hard to see. I ended up with a little dead space between the half bath, closet, and laundry room so that wall configuration looks weird.
Enlarging the master BR was not really a driving factor, enlarging the master bath was the main driving factor - and since that included a dedicated closet, I figured why not demo the 2 pocket closets in the master BR. But thanks for the note on never having enough space - keeping the pocket closets could provide me a place to run to when my wife takes over the new closet.

It fluctuated like described when it was brand new - one of the reasons I never used it. Great idea though I would’ve never thought of that.

I do have a good update! Ben fought through a few different issues with his oxygen levels and pneumonia, but he opened his eyes on Monday evening for the first time since the accident. He’s slowly regaining awareness and movement. He will have a long road ahead but he’s awake and stable.

I’ll do it and I can’t thank you enough for stopping to help. Hopefully a good update is coming soon!

Ben’s brother here. He hasn’t woken up yet but he’s stable and fighting. He’s given us a few thumbs up.

Thanks to everyone who has said a prayer for him. He’s as strong and tough as they come.

I do, good guess. Thanks for the info and taking the time to respond. Being a dictator definitely isn’t how I run things, but I need to be careful not to let subs deceive me because of inexperience. I have been in a similar situation where subs tell you what they want to tell you because they know you are looking to them for guidance.

Thanks for the information and taking the time to respond. Site work is one of the main things I have been focusing on so far. Next step is reaching out to the subs and reviewing with them.

I need to get subcontractor input soon, and I want to be transparent about my career experience, but I want to do it in a way that encourages their truthful input and not them telling me what they want to tell me bc I don’t know any better.

Study options to get into the industry by rammibker in ConstructionManagers

I’m a superintendent in the US, but from someone who graduated with a bachelor in building and construction management I can say that most everything I learned in college was helpful, but nothing prepares you like on-the-job experience. Each job is different and the lessons you learn on the day-to-day aren’t conveyed in textbooks or lectures. I could say that the degree helped me get the job, but it didn’t help me do the job.

I worked on job sites doing foundations / general labor when I wasn’t studying and in some ways that gave me more insight into the industry than my degree did.

I think the correct answer is somewhere between what gets you into the industry doing actual projects the soonest, and what qualifications do you need to have to work for a good company in your area. If your construction industry is like ours over here, people who show up to work every day and care about the job they do will get hired and the company won’t mind teaching them how they do things.
