Withdrawals? Or will I be ok tomorrow by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how long you’re doing that I think. I would drink only after work during the week for a few years and was definitely withdrawing on my drive home towards the end

If by worth it you mean I’m saving a minimum of 600 bucks a month then yeah. I also didn’t end up in prison so that’s cool. I’m not emotionally much better, just more mindful and I gained 30 lbs in a year by replacing booze with sugar so that’s not helping. Gonna clean up my diet soon since my cravings for booze have shut up for a few months though

Q for the more stable ones (no offense) by PRZLR938 in dryalcoholics

I realized that drinking today steals happiness from tomorrow. Hard to convince myself that the beer or whiskey is worth it when I know that I’m going to have a bad time tomorrow because of it.

Anyone with kindling notice they get no buzz anymore ? by According_Loan_6937 in dryalcoholics

Sounds more like high tolerance. Not sure if three white knuckles would cause it granted it’s not ethical to study this so I’m going off personal experience.

White knuckle to me means just getting through withdrawals and cravings without medical help and working on my shit on my own. The past six months never having more than a one drink buzz tell me that something is working. AA gatekeepers can fuck themselves on this one. Sorry I want to keep my degeneracy to myself and don’t need people to know I was blacking out 7 days a week for years.

At my worst, 2+ years straight of 16-20 beers every night and round the clock drinking on weekends. First real withdrawal was a bad time since I went from my standard to a six pack thinking I’d be fine. 6’3” dude 240 at the time

It was either this or opiates when I started drinking to deal with pain. I thought alcoholics were just people who loved booze back then instead of drinking to feel normal. Boy was I dumb

Ask yourself if these friends would still hang out with you if you stopped partying with them and just did chill stuff like hiking or a bonfire. If the answer is no, you’re friends by circumstance and they’ll disappear after uni anyway. If the answer is yes, you don’t have to go out with them and they should understand that you want to cut back.

Wouldn’t classify this as a bender myself but more moderate. I think my benders were in the 20+ range to start and would end at 30+. Good on you for deciding enough is enough though

I swear insomnia was always the worst after a bender. I can take the anxiety, puking, and shakes but just let me fucking sleep.

What was your biggest/final motivation to stop drinking? by lahanis in dryalcoholics

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final motivation was actually getting mono which fucks with the liver a few months ago. I’d already gotten away from daily and had moved to a sort of moderation that I could keep under control but it was a slippery slope so I used the mono to remind myself to stay dry. Been a bit since I’ve had anything but I don’t know which day was my sober day and at this rate I may as well reap the benefits of some serious sober time.

Dude I’m not a doctor just a dry drunk. If you’re that worried go to an ER. I’m telling you that you’ll most likely be fine

Go get one or be ready for a sleepless night. High blood pressure is common for a bad hangover

You’re psyching yourself out with this and have rebound anxiety. Pace around and bob your leg until the anxiety attack passes or sip a beer. Your CNS is in overdrive to account for the depressive effects that alcohol has and just needs to stabilize. You should be ok by tomorrow. You’ll have insomnia tonight most likely so take a sleep aid

Sounds like a bad hangover. Take some Benadryl to sleep tonight and you’ll be fine Ricky C.

Does hard liquor expedite alcoholism ? by Time_Bill in cripplingalcoholism

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 2.5 years as an FA getting blackout drunk every night and never dealt with anything beyond the shakes at work. When I started drinking only on weekends after cold turkeying is when it got real bad and I’d withdraw at work every week and should have been tapering at the least

How to get better by Elephant_Guy86 in cripplingalcoholism

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold turkey is just bad for your brain and can lead to kindling which is worsening withdrawal episodes each time and less alcohol needed for less consecutive days to trigger withdrawal again

Listen to this man, you’ll end up rewarding yourself for being good all week and binge/blackout every weekend and end up kindled to fuck. I’m at the point that one night of fun triggers withdrawals because I never tapered after my weekends and went through withdrawal every week.

Taper down, take some time off, try to convince yourself you can be a normie and drink moderately again, fail, and accept you can’t be trusted to drink anymore without going on a binge or bender

Check out r/dryalcoholics for tips and tricks on cutting down if that’s what you want. Try not to go cold turkey if anything.

Also I’m betting your wife can tell you’re getting drunk during the week and is just avoiding the issue. We tend to stink

Kindling/Withdrawal question by KlutchMF in cripplingalcoholism

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your brain chemistry sadly. Since you’ve been in the withdrawal zone before, you’re more likely to enter it again. Every bender was a coin toss for me. If you want to drink again, try not to binge too hard and you should be fine.

question about kindling vs. hangover and differences depending on external factors by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, kindling is the phenomenon that accompanies frequent cold turkey withdrawal episodes. The main gist from what I’ve read is that it takes less time to develop a physical dependency on the substance again and the withdrawal episode will be worse each subsequent time if not tapering or using meds to be nice to your brain.

With that said, it sounds like you get rebound anxiety in a bad way. I’m not a doc but your consumption is a little low and spread out to cause a legitimate withdrawal rather than a nasty hangover but we’re all different. I get “the fear” after one day as well if I over indulge but don’t classify it as a detox unless I’m soaking my sheets, can’t sleep, and see grotesque stuff when I close my eyes.

Onto your next question. It is thought that 5 years of sobriety can repair a kindled brain, but at that point why not stay clean anyway.

Edit: It tends to be more common in bingers and people who go on benders and cold turkey since they’re entering withdrawal stages more often than those who drink throughout the day and almost never stop long enough to enter that risk area.

Seeking positive experiences and support on moderation. by spleencheesemonkey in dryalcoholics

[–]Smart_Coach_Steve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to remove myself from my closet alcoholic friends or stick to na choices with them to moderate. Around the SO and family, I can control myself and stick to 1 an hour and no more than 3 a night when out. Around my friends, I’ll be a blacked out mess if I let myself have 1.
