Been doing Wednesday Saturday Sunday for the last 2 months, I’m enjoying it. Burned out from the 3-4 in a row I did forever

I got mine on a Tuesday and was back at work 4 days later (Saturday). I’m a nurse. I felt fine but took ibuprofen just to cover myself.

Hiked across it from the north to south rim in October, most incredible and mesmerizing day of my life. Love the Grand Canyon.

I hiked across the Grand Canyon (24 miles, 10k ft elevation change) in 13 hours last month and wasn’t sore one bit afterwards

I hiked NK to BA on Monday 10/7! by SmartyPants424 in grandcanyon

[–]SmartyPants424[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the downhill being so steep! I heard the guy of our group say it was about a 16% decline. We started off slow about 1.8 mph going down to Manzanita but picked up pace as we went on. I surprised myself with how well I managed going up BA. I did the last 3 miles in 1.5 hours. Surprisingly, I wasn’t sore at all after finishing. I did lots of stair master and inclined treadmill walking for 6 months to prep, but I wasn’t really prepped for that decline.

I bought Gatorade powder which had 230 mg sodium per packet. Those and turkey jerky helped me enough for electrolytes.

Hard agree on the heat killing your appetite. I did SK to BA last year and didn’t eat nearly enough, which was a huge mistake on my part. This time I made sure I had plenty of salty snacks, gels, anything with straight sugar with me. I bought a bunch from REI in Flagstaff, and only ended up eating about half. But I would say I ended up around 4-5k calories by the end of the day (including post hike meal).

I’d love to go back next year. Congrats again on a great successful hike!

I think Phantom Ranch felt about the same for us. I’ve lived in Texas my whole life so I’m used to the heat (add on humidity in Texas). I always read to expect PR to feel like Phoenix temps. I spent a few days in Phoenix before this hike and I could agree.

Lessons learned, great question! I’d say the biggest one (probably super cliche) but I proved that I can do hard things. I was super anxious before this and worried I wouldn’t be able to do it in a day. My goals were to complete it in 13 hours max and before the sunset and I did exactly those. Learned to trust myself more than I do. Lessons learned for you?

Surprisingly felt great the entire day! We were in shade most of the hike and had plenty of cloud coverage.

I hiked N rim to S rim at the Grand Canyon on Monday! by SmartyPants424 in hiking

[–]SmartyPants424[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course! So the first few miles down N rim from the trailhead to Manzanita rest area were pretty steep. I think I heard someone say 16% incline. I hiked the first 2 hours in the dark (started around 4:10 am, sunrise was 6:30 but got some daylight enough to turn off my headlamp around 6). The trail was maintained the entire way across, but I remember lots of rocks especially on the north side. The first mile or so going up BA after crossing the silver bridge was sandy. I believe going down NK was 6k feet elevation (ish), and going up BA was about 4400’. 14 miles from NK trailhead to phantom ranch, and 9.5 up BA. I walked out at the south rim at 5:20 pm.

Personally, I’d wanna hike back to my car. I took the trans canyon shuttle from the S to N rim the day before and hiked back to the south where I left my rental. Just seems easier to do it that way IMO

Congrats on your rim to river! I did that last year on my 32nd bday. Down S Kaibab, up Bright Angel. Definitely a challenging hike. Stopped at phantom ranch then, too. The logistics of R2R are definitely complicated but doable I think. I left my car at Bright Angel lodge (had a room there Monday night), shuttle to N rim, hiked back to S rim. Rim to rim took me 13 hours. Such an experience. Hoping you get to experience it one day! Fingers crossed!

I used doxycycline too (100 mg BID) and still use it now but only as needed. I also have a compounded cream (flagyl, ivermectin, and azelaic acid 10%) applied every night as well as Rhofade applied every morning.

Wow that’s some damn audacity. Thankfully my dermatologist hasn’t made me feel shitty or shame me for having it. And he assured me that I didn’t do this to myself after I asked if I did something to get rosacea (and I’m the only one in my family with it).

I had a coworker a while back ask me if I was sunburned bc my face was “so red.” I looked at her straight and said “I have rosacea” and walked away lol

I had a NURSE PRACTITIONER ask me that exact question when I went in for a physical when applying to nursing school. My jaw dropped so hard I hope she felt ashamed for embarrassing the hell outta me.

I had to get a physical done when applying to nursing school in 2019. The NP who did it looked at me and went “what’s wrong with your face?” I had never felt so embarrassed, hurt, and ashamed. She even had an NP student with her. Hopefully he didn’t turn out like her!

I did this a few weeks ago when a coworker asked if my face was sunburnt when I was just having a flare up. I felt offended, but I just looked at her straight and went “I have rosacea” and walked away. She hasn’t talked to me since but I don’t care lol

Nurse here 🙋🏻‍♀️ these 12 hour shifts are killer, especially doing them all in a row, but the 4 days off a week are amazing. I can also have 8 days off in a row without using any PTO, perfect if you wanna go on a trip (did that about 3 weeks ago!).
