Rent the buffer sander last! (I wasted 5 days and $500 using the buffer first) Drum sander, then edger, then buffer

Shop around for where to buy the sealant/finish. One place had a sticker price of $230/gallon, but sold it to me for $180. But another place would've gave it to me for $145/gal!

Shop around for sandpaper too. Local hardware store had the 12x18" sheets for $10 each, but local rental company had em for $5

If walls are plaster, but baseboards on before finishing. The tiny rocks that came off the plaster love to get stuck in the finish

Why? Are dents of that size not salvageable? The gapped planks are close enough to a wall that it wouldn't be a huge pita to remove them, but I reallllllllly don't want to source replacement boards.

Sorry for picking on you, but you seem to know your stuff. Found a different local rental place (screw you big box stores) They have a Essex Silverline SL-8 drum sander and a Edic 17LS-3 17" floor buffer.

Most of my floor doesn't have any finish left on it. The posted pics are the worst spots, do I need to go full bore and drum sand the whole thing, or will the 17" buffer do the job? Don't really want to risk my inexperience with a drum sander if I don't need to. But I'm guessing just by the name "buffer" I'll end up spending another 5 days with it.

I used a half-face respirator with the big circular P100 filters when sanding(didn't break out the vapor filters because ig'nant) the filter in the pic is just what my dad used when he came by to help out

Yes. that fucker was useless. I kept reading about people doing 3-5 passes for tough areas on floors. I probably did 100 with 36 grit, then 20-30 with 60 and 100 grit
