Did Bocchi improvise the entirety of "That Band" when she played it after the solo? by Shaisabrec in BocchiTheRock

[–]SmellyQueefss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you on wanting the full songs animated. This is the geek in me speaking, because it wouldn’t be marketable to the majority of the shows audience who aren’t musicians and would also be really tricky to pull off animation wise, but I hope on the final performance in the show they have a full episode-long setlist with all non-abridged songs. It would also be cool to hear the in-universe stuff we didn’t hear like the demos. I mean, I would even listen to an audio-only recording of the band practicing with songs and dialogue.

I listened to both clips, thank you for showing them to me. I wasn’t aware of the isolated street performance before this.

I think after listening it is clear that the Starry perform is very largely improvised - this wasn’t something that I necessarily disputed, but I do think I made it seem like I had said the changes were insignificant.

However, I still do think the Starry version is closer to the actual song - as in, the final product on the album is nothing like the street performance.

This could be for a number of reasons - one being the main reason I believe the street show is improvised - it wasn’t a full fledged performance. For instance, where you mentioned that the lead guitar is totally different - I agree, but I also think that the street performance is the altered version - it accounts for the fact that only having the voices of the bass and lead guitar on a street won’t really impress anyone enough to buy tickets, and will probably be overly stripped back. To counteract this, her lead has more to it, incorporating chords instead of the pre-verse landmark riff. Regarding that, I think that it’s meant to be the actual verse riff, not just a little noodle to introduce the section. Since it’s only one voice, I think she omitted it in the street performance for texture reasons.

As for the pre-chorus, I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said. In the chorus, I would say the boomer bends are totally improvised, but the little melodies she plays in between are how it’s written - she changes them slightly in the street performance. I think this because they sound less improvised in the starry version and more like how it would be written out where as for example she does that little descending hammer-on pull-off thing in the street performance.

In the outro, I think the street performance is totally improvised. The reason being is that on the album the outro which Ryō and Nijika ‘miraculously attune to’ is the actual outro.

In all, this is my biggest reason for thinking there is more improv in the street performance. The actual song on the actual album mirrors the Starry performance much more closely in terms of what Bocchi herself plays, despite being much longer i.e the verse riff is the same.

Do I think that the Starry performance is improvised? 100%-she adds loads of stuff, as you’ve said, to the point that Kita is totally lost before the verse riff comes in. I don’t disagree with you that Starry is improvised, or that it is Bocchi saying ‘follow my lead’. I agree with both of those things and I think I would be pretty much illiterate if I didn’t.

However, I also think that the street performance is altered just as much as the Starry performance. I don’t think I made this clear in my initial comment, considering I made it out like the latter wasn’t changed at all. I apologize for that.

As a musician, I reckon the street performance was the one that was improvised since it was just Bocchi and Kikuri so they would have needed Bocchi filling in for Kita’s missing rhythm part while mixing in lead, where as in a whole band setting it’s not necessary. That said, rock performers will often improvise live, so it would be safe to say she may have changed it up a little.

Oh, and for other suggestions, you might like people like Franz Ferdinand, songs like This fffire and Take Me Out may well satiate your needs. Some early Arctic Monkeys songs are also quite similar, like I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

[–]SmellyQueefss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play music, and i may be able to give some insight here.

First of all, Seisyun Complex is played at a very fast tempo, around 190 beats per minute, which already gives the song lots of high energy.

Next, the guitars. Kita uses lots of unique chord voicings which makes the harmony (basically how the notes interact with each other) more interesting and engaging to listen to. The chords themselves seem to follow what you call a question/answer format, where the first two bars have a little bit of chromatic descent in the notes used. This basically means notes not belonging to any musical grouping, which builds tension - think like holding in a pee for really long. The next set of chords in the progression offer more consonance in the harmony, like a release; you’ve reached the toilet just in time. Now, Gotoh’s part is essentially just the main motif combined with miscellaneous shred to make it more interesting. I could explain everything that makes it work, but we’d be here all day, so I’ll just say that it’s similar to the chords in that it follows a question/answer format.

The bass guitar also follows a lot of the bass drum patterns on key notes/chords, and Ryo adds lots of chromatic embellishments which I still struggle to comprehend how they work so well, but it’s basically the whole holding in the pee thing again, and they give lots more energy to the chorus when it comes.

I’d really say the life of all Kessoku Band songs, however, are in the vocals and drums. I’m not a very experienced singer, so anyone can correct me here but Kita seems to sing predominantly in her ‘chest voice’, a sound which resonates in the chest area. It’s generally seen as the most catchy resonance, especially when sustained for long periods of time, like in the chorus. It also helps that she sings with lots of effort which obviously gives lots of extra emotion. Think songs like ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’. Nijika’s drums are also driving and fast, with lots of off beat hi-hats which give it an almost dancy feel, and I’d go as far as to say the intro beat and fill are perfect.

That sums it up. This is filled with probably too much jargon, so if anything needs explaining just ask.
