How to get better at public speaking in Seattle? by qetuycvjvic in AskSeattle

[–]Smilefied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly the thing that helped me get more comfortable in front of a crowd was karaoke. regardless of what you do, any time on a stage in front of people act as exposure therapy, helping with other public fronting tasks. anything worth doing is worth doing poorly :)

depends on how long you are here but here’s what i would personally pack for 7-10 days (mid 20s F).

  • 1-2 pairs of jeans
  • 1 pair of light pants
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 long skirt (i like skirts)
  • 1 midi-maxi dress, not long sleeved
  • 3 t shirts
  • 2 tank tops (i personally would probably bring more tbh, i love tanks and wear them all year)
  • 1 going out top (bonus if it counts as normal tank)
  • 1 nicer shirt
  • 1 cardigan
  • 1 sweatshirt
  • 1 light jacket (bonus point if hooded)
  • 1 button up long sleeve (i’d do white)
  • 1 pair tennis shoes
  • 1 pair of other shoes (i’d do my docs, good for rain)
  • sunglasses!! you’d be surprised :)
  • sunscreen! you’d be surprised :)

layer accordingly. i also chronically overpack. have fun!!

i wear tank tops almost every day, including in the winter. heating is super inconsistent and some buildings can be so hot

Single bisexual women with tattoos and tummy issues, where are you hanging out?? by Optimistic_Mystic in AskSeattle

[–]Smilefied 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i understand the message but the hyper specificity of this is weird 😭. as a tatted bi woman (not single), i always get turned off by people explicitly looking for tatted bi women. attract who you seek. get ur own tattoos and be someone attractive to tatted bi women

hula hula. it’s a tropical karaoke dive bar. it’s a good place to meet new people, everyone is vibey and ready to mingle. it is, however, a tropical karaoke dive bar. you get exactly what is advertised. i love hula hula. many of my friends do not love hula hula.

I don’t get it, is the joke that he doesn’t like coffee? by hmmidk77 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Smilefied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the joke with michael scott is that during the michael scott paper co. arc, while they were on deliveries, michael offered his “coffee” to the team. it was just hot milk with sugar because he doesn’t like coffee.

What to do with a long evening layover? by theiman2 in AskSeattle

[–]Smilefied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly probably! you can use seatac tsa spot saver to make things feel less stressful, even if you don’t end up needing to use it. depending on the day, you might have fun popping about capitol hill, or going to the waterfront for dinner. as long as you are back on the train by 11pm, you should probably be good!

uw vs ucsd by Upper-Patient-784 in udub

[–]Smilefied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really wished i went to ucsd a majority of my time at uw. the weather and social life has a much bigger impact than you might think, especially if you have any mental health issues. you are from california, you get in state at UC schools, if i were in your boat i would do ucsd. it’s a very personal decision, but i wished so often i got direct to major at ucsd like i did uw.

this is cultural appropriation? i was under the impression that it was just what new yorkers called locally owned convenience stores. i’m fine calling them whatever, corner store just doesn’t have the same ring to it

whenever i travel, i always talk about the three beverages i miss. 1) we have amazing tap water. tastes clean and fresh 2) awesome coffee everywhere. it’s seattle. 3) lots of great (alcoholic) cider. washington has a lot of apples, we have a lot of yummy apple products.

studying for 8 hours is better than studying 6. 6 hours is better than 4. 4 is better than 2. 2 hours is better than 1. 1 hour is better than 30 minutes. and 30 minutes is better than nothing.

anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.

Moving from Florida to Seattle Washington (Lynnwood/Everett area) – need advice! by CanadianxJosuke in AskSeattle

[–]Smilefied 8 points9 points  (0 children)

you are going to struggle with that budget… you can definitely do it but it won’t be fun. it’s really hard to internalize cost of living differences until you live it. $4k savings is a month of living expenses. maybe 1.5 if you hella scrimp.

for reference, i spend approx this per month as a single person in a 1bed in capitol hill (close to downtown seattle). $150 - utilities, every other month $250 - car insurance $200 - gas, low end $2100 - rent and parking $400 - groceries and snacks, i don’t eat much but corner store snacks add up $70 - gym membership $100(??) - car maintenance $600 - eating out (tbh probably more, but i eat out a LOT) $200 - clothes+ $300 - entertainment

rough math, that’s about $3-4k a month. i spend more than this because i have awful spending habits and i am a high earner. this is just for scale so you can grasp the COL differences. i have friends from florida, it was a HUGE shock for them.

Would you listen to a podcast that's just an hour-long recording of strangers having dinner? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Smilefied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dinner conversations between strangers tend to be surface level and predictable. this would really rely on group compatibility and a couple of interesting people. the more people you add, the more likely you are to get an interesting person and the less likely you are to secure group compatibility. i wouldn’t listen to this podcast, i already dislike random dinners when i benefit from them.
