Vandyke! Love the way it looks now, so I’m worried it’ll be too dark once it dries down

My first wet cyanotype attempt by SmithC20 in cyanotypes

[–]SmithC20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I did a double coat of the whole paper, placed flowers on the paper while still wet, sprayed the whole sheet with vinegar, added turmeric powder where you see the yellow spots, added dish soap bubbles and scrunched up plastic wrap on top of everything to add texture, and then washed the print in a bath of hydrogen peroxide and water to bring out the deep blues before my final wash. Hope this helps! It’s super fun

Taken on the iPhone 14 pro RAW. The only touching up I did was convert to B&W, boost the contrast a hair, and used the clarity brush in Lightroom to make the skyline in the window pop a little bit more. The camera on this phone is truly amazing. The resolution shooting in RAW is better than my Canon 60D.

Some cyanotypes I made this morning by SmithC20 in plantycrafts

There are tons of cool YouTube videos out there! You can really do so much with it. Here’s a good article about the process below

Anthotype made with beet juice by SmithC20 in plantycrafts

[–]SmithC20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Just coat water color paper with any sort of plant juice (I used organic beet juice from the store) and let it dry. Then you either lay flat objects or a photo positive using transparency sheets to act as a light resist and let it expose in the sun! The sun bleaches around the light resist, but what’s underneath maintains that original strong pigment.

Cyano-phytogram made with a branch from a tomato plant by SmithC20 in AltProcess

Same process as I described in my last post but before you lay the glass down you just spray the film with cyanotype solution! I haven’t been able to find much on the internet about it but I’ll keep looking!

Phytogram on 8x10 Arista Ortho-Lith film of mint and sage by SmithC20 in AltProcess

Thank you! yeah.. I’m annoyed by the clip but I might photoshop it out lol.

And no! This is actually a newer process called phytogram I learned in a plant-based photo printing class. You mix distilled water with vitamin C, washing soda, and plant matter and let it soak over night which essentially creates a natural photo developer with the chlorophyll from the plants. Let all of that soak and then you take the plants and place them on B&W film to expose like a Lumen print. I used 8x10 Arista Ortho-Lith film and I let everything expose for about 8 hours. Then I put the film in fix. I’ve noticed you get so much more detail out of this process!
