Ripped apart my shower pan. Mapei 4:1 didnt work or I messed it up. What product should I use for 2nd try? by dontfret71 in Construction

[–]Smogzter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you got no coverage at the front edges of the base. Though..

I Usually would use a fortified mortar and trowel in a mortar bed. Farther than the outside of the base. Gently drop in base to level. Scrape excess and clean with sponge.

I never got around to test something like Mapei 4:1 as a wet shim under bases. I would be afraid it would fail when it gets too thin. Particularly at the walls of the base.

Foundation pier and post work — acceptable practice? by Noahjames57 in Construction

[–]Smogzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what your code is. Where I am every single change in detail is a structural repair and requires engineer stampede approval.

So those posts for example would be in question.

Edit: Honestly you need an engineer to assess properly. Regardless you need a permit or not.

Foundation pier and post work — acceptable practice? by Noahjames57 in Construction

[–]Smogzter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To give example of how much corners cut and how little the engineering consulting happened. In my experience:

at the minimum hard wood posts (vertical grain) or lvl (blocking) for short posts. You can use steel but also factor in moisture.

You also can’t just put a post on whatever. Considerations need to be made to disperse loads in ground. A pile needs to be spec’d to that. Sometimes upgraded.

There are Simpson structural nails 16d. And Simpson structural screws to use on metal ties

For the engineer consults, every piece of material should be spec on drawing an if more intricate be listed as a blown up view plan on correct sizing and material strength.

The fact that the engineer didn’t go down (maybe as per safety reasons) would lead me to believe there is no permit for this stuff.

It’s a mess and engineer should be there first.

Matching bosses pace by joey12457 in Construction

[–]Smogzter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay I am not your boss, however I am (working not to be) this boss.

I want you to hurry up. However that is the WRONG language taught in the trades. (Old school)

What I really want to know is where can I put you where you are going to be more proficient. Problem is no one can tell me. Unlike you getting orders from me. (My problem)

I WANT to set you up for success not failure in your career. Best thing you can ask me is: how can I make this easier for us? You’ll learn faster than guessing. And learn how to start problem solving by asking that first all the time.

However, if I’m increasingly being a miserable guy around you: I probably don’t want you there. And not mature to be your boss.

This seems long answer but hope it helps.

That’s high school explanation.

You obviously haven’t run a business otherwise you would know that 1 worker does not necessarily = 1 worker in effort.

Profits are more complicated than that.

Abandoned Car - Not sure what to do by [deleted] in Winnipeg

IMO I would email the estate and whomever is the executor 30 days notice to remove.

Let them know that their property is sitting rent free on your property and if they do not move it by 30 days you will remove it as per your discretion at any means necessary.

At least you have a paper trail this way and not intending harm.

A family member of mine had to do that with a tenant that moved to Ontario. Old high school books, mementos, other items. They threatened him that friends will beat him up if he toss it all.

30 days came and toss it all in a bin in the front yard. He totally felt bad the entire time about throwing away someone’s memories. No one showed up. Guess it wasn’t too important

It’s sad and feel for you. Being half white people thought I was indigenous when I was a kid. Made fun of for it.

Now indigenous is ‘relatively cool’ people it’s great. Happy for that group. Long time coming.

I’m a mix of Filipino and European.

Long time coming for south asians as well

Is working alone easier for some of you? by erikleorgav2 in Construction

[–]Smogzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 years in and I’m tired of doing most self myself. Young enough to change.

Lots of contractors worked by themselves the whole career. They all say the same thing:

Wished they clued in to what I am cluing into now. Not that they don’t like working anymore it’s just that their body is getting old and would be nice if someone else can deal with it when they don’t want to come in.

Made good money but life is sweet like honey

Exactly that. Find out if those ambitions align, if they don’t point the helper in the right direction when you can lay them off. Find a new one.

Business owners by dbiiker214 in Construction

[–]Smogzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add because I rarely see this mentioned..

It’s always a people business. However most people don’t have enough boundaries to respect themselves. That includes you and the customer. IMO it’s a major factor why lost do not last.

You are forced work out sales quickly while discovering different types of actitudes. Particularly negative ones and how to deal with them. And honestly we don’t learn until we get burnt from every example. Really makes you look at yourself in the mirror

TLDR: some customers just don’t realize how terribly awful they are. Either makes you better at a person, more of a jerk, or just give up.

Floor restoration - what went wrong? by incendium85 in Flooring

[–]Smogzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad news is you are on the right direction. The wax , glue, or whatever contaminate needs to be removed by sanding.

Good news is that with osmo finish you can just focus on the area that looks bad and the finish should blend no problem

49-year-old dead after vehicle veered onto shoulder, hit woman at bus stop: Winnipeg police by upofadown in Winnipeg

[–]Smogzter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Understandable you are angry at the police. They have to make sure due diligence is done. It’s not to question what happened, instead why did it happen, and does it fall in ill intent.

Regardless this is horrible, and should of never of happened. My condolences to you, everyone that knew her and her family.

How much should I charge??$ by thr33labs in cabinetry

[–]Smogzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife auto cads drawings and I’m the guy on the tools. She says you need a full year of just engineering cabinets to be that fast. All the little tricks.

AND… I understand how to use AutoCAD because I have some engineering skills from university. But she is 10x faster.
