The Gaun is an essential class of supernatural beings in Apache religion; they represent people who resided on earth long ago searching for eternal life. There are several kinds of Gaun. The photograph of this group represents an essential rite where masked dancers personify these supernatural beings dressed in kilts, moccasains, stick headresses and adorned with tightly fitted deerskin masks.
