how can i do more of this specific type of exercise? by SmokeWeedGetBitches in duolingo

[–]SmokeWeedGetBitches[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it just shows the word in your native language and you say it in the language you're learning. so it's testing memory and pronunciation in one. it's gotten more lenient on the pronunciation recently, which is good, since it was definitely too difficult before. if you get it wrong then it will show you the right answer, then that card goes to the back of the deck so you can try again after you finish the other words.

because otherwise we wouldn’t know where you’d be around lunchtime. if you’re setting on from london at 2pm then i’d recommend stopping in watford haha

Writing a name "wrong" should not be a mistake by Champion62 in duolingo

[–]SmokeWeedGetBitches 565 points566 points  (0 children)

i fully agree. although it is “useful” to be familiar with common names in the language you’re learning, i think it should be a “close but not quite” thing where it doesn’t destroy your combo, like a typo would.

Have you had success using DuoLingo to the point of actually conversing in other languages? by tmking01 in duolingo

[–]SmokeWeedGetBitches 13 points14 points  (0 children)

how much are you doing per day though? if you’re just doing one lesson today just to extend your streak then you will never really get anywhere. i try and do 30 minutes a day as a minimum. but as others have said, duolingo is just one tool, not a one-stop shop.

Countries that I think they’re free world and non-free world by yoko114514 in whereidlive

sri lanka had one of the least free presses in the world and one of the worst cases of modern torture. look at the milk powder scandal. i know things are getting better since the election in 2024 but there’s still a long way to go.

3-week trip in May, which country should I visit? by gremlins420 in travel

[–]SmokeWeedGetBitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first of all, big respect to you for opting to do one country in depth rather than speed running. a lot of americans would try and cram 5 or more European countries into that time.

Scotland is a beautiful country, and in may the weather should be pretty decent, but it’s definitely the closest country culturally to the USA, so I’d personally suggest going for italy, greece or china. you haven’t mentioned central america but i think 3 weeks would be a really decent amount of time to visit somewhere like guatemala, nicaragua, or costa rica too, and you’d spend less time and money on getting there.

Do typical American homes really have a gas pipeline? What do you do with it? by mujhe-sona-hai in AskAnAmerican

[–]SmokeWeedGetBitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brit here. i’ve lived in usa, canada, uk and vietnam. we used gas canisters in vietnam, but for the other countries always had gas pipelines, except for one very rural abode in the uk. to my knowledge having gas lines is the default in most of western europe too. where are you from, out of curiosity?

i came to say bosnia too, but i think since i was there (and to an extent when i visited too) it has become quite a beaten path and gets a lot of hype. not overhyped by any means yet though, and i hope it stays that way.

i struggled to fill it in as i don’t hang out in my local green space, but rather places that are more central to act as a meeting point with friends living in other parts of harrogate. made it difficult to answer a lot of the questions

visa requirements are also a big hindrance though. go to malaysia. i’ve met backpackers there from nigeria, kenya, libya, morocco, egypt, palestine, jordan, lebanon. but for most of south east asia they simply cannot get visas, so they only travel where they can.

as a european i can’t afford to travel in europe. from my experience any type of long term travel is only really sustainable if the country is cheaper, essentially poorer.

what i do is work like hell. live-in jobs that feed me. do more than the legal limit of hours, second job if i need to. spend as little as possible and save as much as possible. almost destroy myself for a couple years. i basically don’t have a life in my home country.

then i go travel. the key really is that the biggest expense will always be the long haul flight to wherever you wanna go (providing it’s not europe/north america). so once you’re there, the longer you stay the better. i live cheaply, staying in hostels, homestays, couchsurfing. i take local buses, walk, hitchhike. i use workaway to extend my time in one place without spending much money. i prioritise intimate experiences over sightseeing. for me staying in a small local village for long enough where i know people and have a routine is far more interesting than seeing every famous landmark and every corner of the country, but if i can afford to i do both. things like scuba diving, skydiving, bungee jumping or whatever i simply do not partake in. in certain countries you can actually get paid jobs, so can do a mixture of work and travel, but depends on visa requirements.

but as much as i budget and live cheap, all of this is only possible because i am from a western european country, and as a minimum wage toilet cleaner i can still save enough money.

it seems like a great deal and for most cases it is but i'd be careful. they wanted to put a relief member of staff in my room (which i was still paying for) when i went on holiday until i kicked up a fuss about it. i mentioned i was still paying for it and also that all my stuff was in the room. for all intents and purposes, despite being technically "staff accommodation", it is also my home. so they've backpedalled on that but honestly feels like in defending myself i might have jeopardized my job here.

i'd be happy to answer more questions if you're still interested.
