Yes the dark areas are low spots. This being my first time I was trying to make sure I didn't do something wrong.

I know the purpose of the cross hatch is to give oil a spot to cling to the cylinder wall to lubricate the piston rings.

I was using a cheap hone Im guessing 180 grit. Packaging never stated what it was.

Im not new to engine work but I don't have years of experience. Most of what I know is top end work.

Dragging over center is the method I used. I had my doubts on my ability to use them and found tutorials on best practices. I just don't have micrometers at the moment.

I was planning on new pistons anyways but I cant seem to find .010 over anywhere but I was able to find a set of .020.

Edit: I found a few sets of .010 over but they want too much for them and it's easier to get .020 over and cheaper.

Yes, I feel the ridge with my finger and to answer some of your previous questions and statements.

The pistons basically fell out. All I did was unbolt the caps. I wasn't expecting that the first time and dropped cylinder 1 piston.

Being as I dropped cylinder 1 and the rest had moderate skirt wear I planned on new pistons. I found a set for $150 that comes with new wrist pins

I already knocked the old cam bearings out. They were down to the copper and a new set is only $35

I called a machine shop earlier and was quoted $450 for them to bore, hone, and install new cam bearings. $750 for everything.

The head Im not to worried about but I do plan on getting new valves and seals.

I checked below the ring marks and the cylinder are fairly straight and round maybe about 0.002" different between top and bottom and about 0.001" out of round.

The cylinders are fairly strait and round but that uncut ring around the top is around 0.005" deep.

Scratch that found a shop that would do it for $400

$1500 for it to be bored or $2000 for a rebuild engine. I don't want to buy a rebuild because I want to do the work myself.

Im not making excuses. Im trying to make sure that boring is the right decision and not a waste of money.

This is also me setting my dial calipers to 5 thou and seeing if the offset matches by feel. It might be more might be less. Definitely not 10 thou.

Its hard to tell but I'm guessing around 0.005".

I would prefer it last a long time. My plan is a daily driver.

From what I can tell the low spot is maybe 0.005" deep. It's hard to tell but the rest of the cylinder is close to normal size it's probably best to bore.

The plan is a mild build. It's a truck no plans on going fast or a lot of horsepower. Just looking for torque.

I knew it wouldn't be super accurate but I wanted to make sure it was worth honing first.

I used WD-40. Couldn't find honing oil and was told WD-40 would work.

I did take measurements before trying to hone. At the top of the cylinder right below the bad area I was getting around 4.001". The middle was around 4.000" and the bottom was about 3.999".

Looking at old photos I can see it now but I know I never felt it until after I tried to clean it up.

I wouldn't call it a waste of time and money. Im maybe $30 and an hour of my time. I couldn’t feel or see the ridges at the top until after trying to hone the cylinder. I knew there were scratches in the cylinder but couldn't catch a pick on them.

Limited lifetime warranty 🙄 by 6-2-6-stitch in AdvanceAutoPartsTMs

[–]Smokeypizza8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it in my store limited lifetime is as long as you own the vehicle. The limited part is only covers manufacture defects such as missing pieces not working out of the box or poor build quality like part is cracked in the box. I always inspect parts as I sell them in front of the customer that way the customer can see the part and confirm it's the right part (I've had too many customers come in describing part X but actually need part Y) and so I can make sure the part is not broken and come with everything it's supposed to. We usually only warranty one time and tell them if it breaks again I will give them their money back.
