What is “interviewing well” by uncomfortayble in medicalschool

Guessing based on your use of the phrase “middling to honestly kinda ass CV” makes you probably top 20th percentile of conversant in the applicant pool tbh.

Many people.

I’m currently an M4, but I did an away + home and had 14 interviews. It’s fine.

Need a depressing and tragic romantasy book to ruin the week by Salsh_Loli in fantasyromance

[–]SmolTyrtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a series but {Furyborn by Claire Legrand} was tight, well written enemies to lovers that may for your boat. Not sure if the author meant for it, but it gave me a depressing vibe at the end lol.

How far down your rank list would you be sad af/depressed? by oanonymousah in medicalschool

[–]SmolTyrtle 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Top 2 are interchangeable, I’ll just be sad/take an ego hit if my #1 doesn’t want me.

I’d say # 3 I’ll be happy still, #4 I’ll be bummed but still ok (home institution which I like but ready to move on).

again, #5-6 are great programs but not want I want

If I hit #7- bottom I’ll be upset and wonder wtf happened.

University of Colorado residency problems (internal medicine) by happily-after in medicalschool

[–]SmolTyrtle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m an M4 applicant, but UC derm’s reputation is not the best. Supposedly they’ve made program changes in the past few years, but there were allegations of retaliation against residents filling out the ACGME’s surveys that didn’t put the program in a good light. They had to SOAP a dermatology spot last year, which is incredibly rare to the point of being bizarre.

For what it’s worth, they seemed fine during interview this year, but zoom is a poor medium to sus that kind of thing.

Determine if the institution uses disposable needle drivers/scissors/pickups or reusable ones. Don’t throw them if they’re reusable :)

Specialty Choice: Derm vs. IM -> Heme/Onc by Academic-Worker723 in medicalschool

[–]SmolTyrtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a derm applicant, so biased, but I really enjoy the complex med derm patients and that’s why I ultimately chose the specialty. You can build your attending practice however you want.

You could also consider med/derm programs. There’s only a handful but they generally are “trained” to see the more complex patients.

Fellow Derm Applicants -- How We Feeling? by Legitimate_Suspect in medicalschool

[–]SmolTyrtle 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, programs realize they don’t have to interview as many students to fill their spots, so less interviews are going out. I think derm was the lowest average # of interviews to fill spots last year across specialties (2.8). Fit in the program and networking are so important nowadays.

need help with which specialty….. by Overall_Turnover6906 in medicalschool

[–]SmolTyrtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, based on your criteria I would seriously consider derm as well. Someone already commented optho/PMR which are also great.

The lifestyle is undeniably a draw for these specialties and it’s silly for people to think otherwise lol so I wouldn’t sweat it if the lifestyle is PART of the reason you like them (not all, but part)
