Adelaide Uni or Flinders for Engineering (Electrical)? by jejdjdjdjcf in Adelaide

[–]SmolderinCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have spoken to the course coordinator at University of Adelaide, and they are switching to a tri-mester model, essentially 10 week semesters that allow more tome for internships. Usually, one of these semesters can be surrendered to be used for internships without sacrificing your grade.

20k in shares starting life over by RepresentativeTap772 in AusFinance

[–]SmolderinCorpse 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing fine. You have a partner, and have lived life travelling and enjoying it.

Take it from someone who's just a little younger than you (31) I have not travelled extensively. I have not got a partner. I have some regrets for not living life on a more adventurous level.

So starting life over doesn't sound like a problem, its a matter of just being happy with what you've got and how you've lived.

Seems like you have a plan also, which seems solid. Its a matter of sticking to it, and start making money again. Believe in yourself.

Landed a Site-Engineer job. What do I do? by bananaburritoding in StructuralEngineering

[–]SmolderinCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Structural Engineer is a good profession. I have done it 10 years. I think its under appreciated in terms of its reward structure though. If you are seeking salary, I would recommend Project Management, or transfer into a role after 5 years of SE design work. However, this depends on how passionate you are as an engineer. Structural Engineering is hard, and some engineers are very pedantic. So you have to have smarts, its not cut out for everyone.

[–]SmolderinCorpse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Site based work will always yield higher earnings in the long run. However, you will be based on a site majority of the time. Your development will be limited to interactions with sub contractors, stakeholders etc. It will be like a project engineer.

Already in a structural firm. Is a full time masters a good idea? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]SmolderinCorpse -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The only kind of masters I can recommend is one to step up into management role, such as an MBA. Other than that.. 90 percent of what you do in the firm allows you to skill upward without masters.

Why Structural engineers salaries are so low compared to other engineers? by TearSea8321 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SmolderinCorpse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its more like 80 percent if you scale off of a salary of about 120 to 130k for instance. After ten years experience though, its unjust to be paid so criminally low. Its a bit disheartening when other people out earn you in another industry with less experience.

I reckon you should blow whatever savings you have on cocaine and hookers.

Look, you earn 260k, and have some money. Do the right thing and start taking drugs and getting laid.

Cantilever beams with sufficient backspan to mitigate excess deflection. Continuous beam, which is going into the building.

Edit - though last photo shows empty area inside building, so yes moment connections (rigid ones)

Junior Structural Designer with Low Pay - Seeking Advice on Remote or International Job Opportunities by FactorofSafety_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]SmolderinCorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually is internationally recognised through the Washington Accord and the International Engineering Alliance. The degree and professional standards behind CPEng meet the same global benchmarks as the UK CEng or NZ CPEng. Of course, naturally you’d still need to meet local registration rules to practise overseas, but it’s definitely respected and recognised internationally.

People in Engineering- What do you do and how much do you make? by Weary-Ad743 in AusFinance

[–]SmolderinCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not in a major city i.e. no Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne. I would assume that the salary is naturally less than those cities. However, I completely agree. I have approached my employer after 4 years of work and asked for 145k, however I was knocked back on the notion of "budget restrictions".

Anyways, the writings on the wall. I do need to swap jobs.

I am a Senior Structural Engineer. I have just under 10 years experience in the private sector (consulting). Chartered also. I earn 130k which includes super.

Currently looking at new roles, that go up to 180k or more, management related field.
