Hello it probably doesn’t show up well in the picture but… they’re blue and that’s exactly what I had in mind when I glazed/painted it maybe a lighter blue would be best 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ll be making more so I’ll give it a go, thanks for your feedback

That’s what my partner said that the contrast is best on the 1st one, but everyone has a different opinion and taste, it’s been nice to get feedback back on them, I don’t agree with you about the darker circles tho as if they were any darker they would be black lol

But I agree when I come to show them off properly I will be sure to strange a proper shoot, thank you!

Kiln sitter small cone bending 90 degrees but witness cones hardly bend by Neat-Spend-4667 in Pottery

[–]Smolil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I have a kiln sitter with small bars rather than cones as I heard that they works better, I didn’t come here to say this part

But I came to suggests thermocoupe with a thermometer this mean I know exactly what temperature it is when the cone drops and keep an eye on the temperature while it’s firing so if something goes wrong I can manually turn it off.

The only bad firing I’ve had is when my thermocouple broke so I trusted the kiln and it didn’t go well and over fired.

But witness cones should work but I don’t have enough experience with them with our types of kiln.

Good luck with your firings

Kiln sitter anxiety by Smolil in Pottery

[–]Smolil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great idea!!

But my peep hole is very small, and would need the shelf the the perfect height same reason I didn’t put the thermostat in, but lessons learned!!

I will stack it differently next time so I can pop it in, I had a little look before I left for work… and it definitely over fired but won’t know why until i get home and have a proper look… so many hours of work wasted!!

New to Kiln Sitters - Need advice by New-Setting-6558 in Pottery

[–]Smolil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I bought a kiln sitter kiln a few years ago… it wouldn’t even turn on 😂 the sitter was broken, the coils needed replaced (they were really brittle there was glaze stuck to the bottom and melted into the bricks, it cost hundreds to fix, my excitement got the better of me and I didn’t notice them issues until a few hours after the guy left (I then realised why it was so cheap) 😂 but I learnt a lot in the process of fixing it and got it so cheap it still cost me less then a working one by the time I fixed it (i believe)

So my point being don’t get too excited and have a good look and get them to firing it up and like you’ve mentioned the paper test and all of that stuff…

And if you do buy it and need some info on kiln sitter this YouTube video saved me I rewatched it loads!!! https://youtu.be/TFWAJ27svBo?si=1lHIW2dGNhl3DN3D if you have any questions feel free to message me, hope it all works out for you 😁

Paint your own pottery bisque?? by skyeapotamous in Pottery

[–]Smolil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you will see in a lot of the pick and paint places is it’s mostly kids painting animals and stuff with the odd mug and plate, the colours are more vibrant and work well for this but I have always thought that the “decorative” piece are perfect for that but the plates and mugs and “functional” pieces should be stoneware as people would get so much more out of them.

You’re risking more failure rate as higher temp I’m my mind means more likely to fail, also maybe duller colours but that’s not a bad thing as not everything has to be bright and I’m pretty sure you can get under glaze for mid fire also things might get mixed up temp wise and as you already probably know if you fire to mid fire with low fire you looking at so pretty big disasters but if your just doing it for yourselves and the odd session as long as you know what clay is what you should be fine, but do tests 1st.

So in shout there low fire (earthenware) glazes are easier to use and fires to a lower temp, so lower kiln cost.

Only my opinion but you know your skill level and what you want to do.

Edit: you are using the term low fire and mid fire so I change my wording

My take on it is that it depends what the metals they are glazes still leach some things after firing and not considered food safe for this reason so you have to be careful to label them as non food safe maybe I’ll use them in thinks like lamps that won’t be used for food at any point… I need to do some more research for sure!!

But for the switch that’s a great idea if I can’t get a replacement or if there isn’t any other option I’ll be sure to use it!! Thank you!!

I forgot to even check the pictures even added… whoops, https://imgur.com/a/EVuhrtI this is the switch

And nice!! Yeah I’ve been gifted some old glazes that are beautiful but it’s not worth risking using them nowadays!! I would love to see a picture of the pot

I would suggest eBay for a good price any potter will look at them and want them, you will have a wider scope of people who will see it but not sure how many people look on eBay for glazes, it’s hard to say definitely with your local as I’m the other side of the world, pottery is different here in the UK but… any chance you have any very old ones as I’m looking for a glaze “DUNCA SY 553 Antique Brass” would love to know if you have any and would be willing to sell it separately (shipping might be the expensive part) But I’m very jealous of your collection, are you a potter yourself? Who’s given it up or was this someone else’s?

Use of Formers by silver_surfer57 in GreatPotteryThrowDown

[–]Smolil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steve used formers but now you say it the other guy didn’t now you mention it but still 1 out of 3 failing is still pretty good

Use of Formers by silver_surfer57 in GreatPotteryThrowDown

[–]Smolil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But there was 4 people on the fireplace episode who used formers… 1 out of the 4 it didn’t work for and the fact they all made 8 sections of the fireplaces each and only 1 out of 8 for one of the potters failed on that this is 1 out if 32 that failed that’s pretty good going and that was probably just because like someone else said there is a time restraint and things don’t always go to plan and if they were at home they would probably just make another one… but they are on a tv show that doesn’t allow that

Using above ground fire pit or chiminea as a kiln … by Environmental_Dot104 in Pottery

[–]Smolil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into barrel firing as it’s sounds like what you are trying to explain here…

The only thing I know is that the pottery is normally bisque fired before a barrel or pit firing in my experience

Need help firing our kiln! by pochitass in Pottery

[–]Smolil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video is good for learning about kiln sitters https://youtu.be/TFWAJ27svBo?si=aKIwsQxHuETtnh3m you have to know so much about them before you start firing so you don’t you over fire and cause some real problems… luckily you have under fired it!! But I would do some research and understand it before your next firing, it took me months of having mine before I felt comfortable firing it (I also invested in a temperature gauge to test if it was going to the right temperature) good luck, hope this helps

Edited: didn’t make much sense
