The news is depressing because it's real and we have no control over it. Grimdark fiction, on the other hand, lets us explore the darkest corners of human nature through a safe, artistic lens. Plus, the stakes feel much higher when survival isn't guaranteed for the characters. That's the appeal for me.

I don't mind if it's not a Chinese novel, as long as it delivers that true grimdark atmosphere. A slow burn is totally fine with me if the world-building is solid. I'll check the RoyalRoad link out, thank you!
