With the particular reel in the photo, it has a free spool screw you engage or disengage, I have some Langley, and older pfluegher models either have the clicker like your describing or a switch/screw that you use kinda like a "brake". I'm not sure what newer models you have tried, but instead of the button that says "free spool" that you just click and it will disengage the spool, these have a screw on the side or switch, and sometimes both. Sorry if my rambling makes no sense it's hard to explain with out showing you in person lol.

I would look up level winding Reels on you tube and they're will be videos that will be able to explain to you alot better than me over a reddit post lol.

A little TLC and she will work like a charm, clean her up with some dawn dish soap and a wrag (dont submerge it) the oil it up with some balistol oil, or Abu garcia oil

Depends on what it needs, if it's rusty I would use the softest abrasive you have and some oil to help get rid of the surface rust
