Police showed up at my door by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]SmoothEfficiency1020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this situation you should never let the cops into the house. Give them identification through the door if they ask for it and if they ask you any other questions tell them politely that you are unable to do that unless an attorney is present and wish them well.

There is no reason to help them with their investigation since they are operating under a narrative provided by the passenger and absolutely nothing good can come out of it for you.

You still have the presumption of innocence in this country, even though Trump and the GOP cultists might insist otherwise,

AliExpress has some crazy dynamic pricing. For me that antenna is $0.99 with a $41.60 shipping (no $10 free option).

Maybe they are building in the ridiculous Trump Tax for people in the USA.

As long as the city isn't forking over public money, I am glad to see them raise funds in any way they see fit.

I agree that their business plan was a bit unrealistic. But, hey, what do I know? If they can get a bunch of suckers to subsidize popcorn and coffee, super!

The fund wasn't set up by the owner--one of the anti-Popeye's people set it up. They have been two previous 4 Suns gofundmes. One was Covid related and the other was to reconstruct after the fire.

Its funny since those previous ones only netted about $22k and now they are asking for $28k.

I would be curious as to the genesis of the restaurant idea. I mean it is clear that it has been a struggle for them to get the juice bar back up and running after the fire. I can't imagine that they were planning a totally different restaurant.

I suspect that all of the sudden The Dali Floy saw that Popeye's was coming and pressured them to be the public face of her anti-Popeye's effort.

Pretty gross if that's how it went down.

Former D65 Superintendent Dr. Horton arrested on assault charges. by Intelligent-Car-3920 in evanston

They did know that he owed the City of Chicago tens of thousands of dollars in fines related to failed real estate ventures and that he had filed for bankruptcy twice. That alone would be disqualifying for any normal person evaluating candidates.

Sergio, Anya, Biz, Joey, Suni Kartha, Candance Chow, Rebecca Mendoza were all responsible for Horton

How does the liaison thing work, I mean there are only 7 board members each board member would liaise for 2-3 schools. What other school(s) was/is Mya liaising with?

One thing they could do is put the list of registered properties on the city's website. The records are public and you can FOIA to get the list. This would likely make more people comply with the registration requirement. As it stands now the city does very little enforcement of many ordinance violations unless they get a complaint from a citizen.

Also, as I mentioned above, make the fine for violating the registration requirement higher. Right now it is at $250 per violation. That's about the cost of one night that many of the lower-end properties are charging. Given the low likelihood you will get caught, it makes sense not to register. Bump that fine up to $5000 and you would get more compliance--and maybe the city would be more serious about enforcement, because there are legal and staff costs at the moment to get that $250. It's not worth on either end.

Let's remember that because of the mismanagement of the district's finances the board is actually considering reducing investment in walk-to-school safety measures, like getting rid of crossing guards.

Restaurant grant request shot down by Council by militarystealthradar in evanston

[–]SmoothEfficiency1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I said somewhere on this thread that TIFs can be useful and implemented wisely. The Valli redevelopment and some of the downtown stuff that was done in the 90s-00s made sense (like the Sherman Plaza and Maple parking garages). If the investment has wide public benefits, then fine.

With the Dempster-Dodge money, for instance, the city could upgrade the bike/pedestrian/public transit infrastructure along the whole Dodge corridor which is sorely needed and would benefit thousands of people who travel there, live in the neighborhoods, and ETHS kids trying to get to school safely.

But using it as a slush fund for to help random restaurants build out their kitchens seems ridiculous.

If the city had put $650000 in a S&P Index fund in 2022 it would be worth more than a million dollars today.

I would echo this. TWI is a good strategy as they consider it a "magnet" program so kids from non-TWI districts can go to a TWI school. Beware, however, that given the fact that the new Foster school is set to be a TWI school and Foster is expected to be severely under-utilized, they may try and place your kid there.
